Post-Game Content

Congratulations, Regent of Alexandria! While you've saved Gaia from the clutches of Necron and Kuja, your adventure in Final Fantasy IX is far from over. A wealth of optional challenges, powerful equipment, and hidden secrets await those dedicated enough to explore every corner of the world. This section will guide you through the most significant post-game activities, ensuring you leave no stone unturned.

Chocobo Hot & Cold and Chocobo Paradise

The Chocobo Hot & Cold mini-game is perhaps the most extensive and rewarding post-game activity. If you haven't already, you'll need a Chocobo and the Chocobo Flute (obtained during Disc 3). Your goal is to find all six Chocographs and their corresponding treasures, which will unlock new abilities for your Chocobo, allowing you to access new areas.

  • Chocograph Locations:
    • Most Chocographs are found by digging in the Chocobo's Forest (near Lindblum) or Chocobo's Lagoon (north of the Outer Continent, accessible by airship or blue Chocobo).
    • The final Chocograph, Mist Ocean, is found in the Chocobo's Air Garden (a floating island accessible only with a gold Chocobo).
  • Chocobo Abilities:
    • Chocobo Dive: Allows your Chocobo to dive underwater for treasure. Essential for many Chocographs.
    • Chocobo Sky: Grants your Chocobo the ability to fly, opening up the entire world map for exploration.
  • Chocobo Paradise: Once you have a gold Chocobo and have found all Chocographs, head to the Chocobo's Air Garden. From there, fly to the southwestern corner of the world map, where you'll find a small, isolated island. Land here to discover Chocobo Paradise, a secret area where you can meet all the Chocobos you've encountered. Speak to the Fat Chocobo for a final reward: the Harkening Stone, which allows you to summon the Fat Chocobo in battle for a powerful attack.

Ozma and the Friendly Monsters Quest

Ozma is arguably the most challenging optional boss in Final Fantasy IX. To even have a chance against this formidable foe, you'll need to complete the Friendly Monsters Quest.

Friendly Monsters Quest

This quest involves finding and interacting with nine specific friendly monsters scattered across Gaia. Each monster will request a specific item. Give them the item, and they will grant you AP and a valuable reward. More importantly, completing this quest significantly weakens Ozma.

  • Garuda: Found on the Popos Heights (near Gizamaluke's Grotto). Give it a Diamond. Reward: 10 AP.
  • Ghost: Found in the Dali Underground. Give it a Ore. Reward: 10 AP.
  • Mu: Found in the Forest near Ice Cavern. Give it a Poe's Flute. Reward: 10 AP.
  • Ladybug: Found in the Forest near Quan's Dwelling. Give it 2 Ore. Reward: 10 AP.
  • Yeti: Found in the Forest near Madain Sari. Give it a Peridot. Reward: 10 AP.
  • Nymph: Found in the Forest near Iifa Tree. Give it 3 Ore. Reward: 10 AP.
  • Jabberwock: Found in the Forest near Oeilvert. Give it a Emerald. Reward: 10 AP.
  • Feather Circle: Found in the Forest near Esto Gaza. Give it a Moonstone. Reward: 10 AP.
  • Ragtime Mouse: This friendly monster appears randomly on the world map. Answer its trivia questions correctly to receive Gil and AP. Answering all questions correctly is crucial for weakening Ozma.

Battling Ozma

Once the Friendly Monsters Quest is complete, head to the Chocobo's Air Garden. Ozma is located on the highest platform. Be prepared for a brutal fight. Ozma has no elemental weaknesses, but its elemental resistances depend on the Friendly Monsters you've encountered. If you completed the quest, it will be significantly weaker.

  • Recommended Party: Zidane, Steiner, Vivi, Eiko/Dagger.
  • Key Abilities: Auto-Life, Auto-Haste, Auto-Regen, Clear-Headed, Jelly (for Ozma's status effects), Reflect-Null.
  • Strategy: Ozma's attacks are primarily elemental. Equipping armor that absorbs or nullifies these elements (e.g., Reflect Ring, Rosetta Ring) is highly recommended. Focus on dealing consistent damage with physical attacks (Zidane, Steiner) and powerful black magic (Vivi). Eiko or Dagger should focus on healing and reviving. Be wary of Curaga which can heal Ozma if it's hit by Holy. Doomsday is a devastating attack that hits all characters; ensure you have Shadow-absorbing equipment or Auto-Life active.
  • Reward: Defeating Ozma earns you the Ozma Card and the Pumice Piece, an essential item for crafting the ultimate weapon for Dagger, Ragnarok.

Excalibur II

For the ultimate challenge and bragging rights, attempt to obtain Excalibur II, Steiner's most powerful sword. This legendary weapon can only be acquired by reaching the final save point in Memoria in under 12 hours of in-game time. This requires an incredibly efficient playthrough, skipping most side quests and battles.

  • Location: The final save point in Memoria, just before the final boss.
  • Strategy:
    • Speed Run: Focus solely on advancing the main story. Skip all optional content, including Chocobo Hot & Cold, Friendly Monsters, and most side quests.
    • Avoid Battles: Run from most random encounters to save time.
    • Optimal Pathing: Know the fastest routes through dungeons and towns.
    • Save Management: Save frequently, but only when necessary, as saving takes time.
    • Equipment: Prioritize equipment that boosts speed and evasion to quickly escape battles.
  • Reward: Excalibur II (Attack 108). This weapon is a testament to your mastery of the game.

Ultimate Weapons and Equipment

Beyond Excalibur II, many characters have ultimate weapons that can be crafted or found in the post-game. These often require rare items or specific conditions.

  • Zidane's Ultimate Weapon: Ultima Weapon
    • Location: Found in a chest on the Invincible airship after defeating Hades in Memoria.
  • Dagger's Ultimate Weapon: Ragnarok
    • Crafting: Requires the Pumice Piece (from Ozma) and Tin Ore (found in various locations, including the Black Mage Village). Take these to the Synthesis Shop.
  • Vivi's Ultimate Weapon: Mace of Zeus
    • Location: Found in a chest in the Memoria area, specifically in the "Time Warp" section.
  • Freya's Ultimate Weapon: Dragon's Hair
    • Location: Found in a chest in the Memoria area, specifically in the "Time Warp" section.
  • Quina's Ultimate Weapon: Gastro Fork
    • Location: Found in a chest in Memoria, in the "Ocean" area.
  • Eiko's Ultimate Weapon: Tiger Fangs
    • Location: Found in a chest in Memoria, in the "Ocean" area.
  • Amarant's Ultimate Weapon: Rune Claws
    • Location: Found in a chest in Memoria, in the "Time Warp" section.

Card Collector

If you're a fan of the Tetra Master card game, the post-game offers a chance to complete your collection. Many powerful and rare cards are held by specific NPCs or dropped by bosses. Seek out every card player you can find, and challenge the Card Master in Treno for some truly unique additions to your deck.

Leveling Up and Ability Mastery

Even after defeating the final boss, there's always room for improvement. Maxing out your characters' levels (Level 99) and mastering all their abilities can be a satisfying endeavor. The Grand Dragons in the Popos Heights (near Gizamaluke's Grotto) are excellent for experience and AP grinding, especially if you have the Level Up and Ability Up abilities equipped.

By tackling these post-game challenges, you'll truly experience everything Final Fantasy IX has to offer, pushing your skills and knowledge of Gaia to their limits.
