Secret & Optional Areas
Final Fantasy IX offers several secret and optional areas that provide valuable rewards and unique experiences. These diversions can enhance your gameplay, offering opportunities for item acquisition, side quests, and character development.
South Gate
The South Gate is an optional stop where you cannot pass through without a Gate Pass. However, you can wait for an NPC to arrive, allowing access to an Item Shop and a place to sleep for 100 Gil. This location is primarily useful for grinding levels if desired.
Ragtime Mouse Sidequest
The Ragtime Mouse sidequest becomes available early in the game and can be pursued until the end of Disc 1. The Ragtime Mouse appears exclusively in forests. You can encounter him up to four times during this period. It is advisable to avoid excessive leveling while searching for him, as higher-level encounters can be tackled later when leveling is more beneficial.
Friendly Creatures Quest: Mu
The Friendly Creatures quest is a game-spanning sidequest, with the first entry being Mu. Mu can be found on the plains and requests an Ore. In return, it provides a Potion and 10 AP. Remember not to attack these friendly creatures if you encounter them, as they are part of this ongoing quest.
Back to Treno
After completing excursions near Treno, returning to the bustling town offers new opportunities. The auction house may have new items available for bidding. Specifically, Feather Boots and the Anklet are sold if you do not already possess them. The Dark Matter, which teaches Dagger the Odin summon, is also available and typically costs around 19,000 Gil. This is the only way to obtain Dark Matter outside of defeating the game's superboss. Additionally, a Rat Tail can be found at the auction.
