Clan Management & Growth

Your clan is the heart of your adventure in Ivalice. Effective management and strategic growth are crucial for overcoming challenges, recruiting powerful allies, and ultimately, achieving your goals. This section will guide you through optimizing your clan's potential.

Recruiting New Members

Expanding your clan roster is vital for diversifying your tactical options and tackling various mission types. You can recruit new members in a few ways:

  • Pub Recruitment: The most common method. Visit any Pub in a town you've liberated. New recruits will periodically appear. Their race, starting job, and stats are randomized. It's often worth checking multiple pubs if you're looking for specific races or job combinations.
  • Mission Rewards: Certain story or side missions will reward you with unique characters or specific race/job combinations upon completion. Keep an eye on mission descriptions for these opportunities.
  • Races to Prioritize Early:
    • Humans: Versatile and can learn almost any job. Essential for early game flexibility.
    • Bangaa: Excellent physical attackers and defenders. Their Soldier and Warrior jobs are strong early on.
    • Nu Mou: Your primary magic users. Recruit a few to start training as Mages or White Mages.
    • Viera: Agile and strong magic users or archers. Fencers and Archers are good starting points.
    • Moogles: Unique support and ranged options. Animists and Thieves are good initial choices.

Job Progression & Ability Learning

The core of character growth lies in mastering jobs and learning abilities. Each character can equip two jobs: a primary and a secondary. Abilities are learned by equipping specific weapons or armor that contain them and then earning Ability Points (AP) in battle.

Strategic Ability Learning

Focus on learning key abilities early to maximize your clan's effectiveness:

  • Weapon-Based Abilities: Many powerful abilities are tied to specific weapons. For example, a Human Soldier needs to equip a Broadsword to learn "Power Break" or a Longsword for "Speed Break." Ensure your units are using equipment that teaches relevant abilities.
  • Support Abilities: These are crucial. For example, a Human Soldier should aim for "Counter" (learned from various swords like the Shortsword) and "Weapon Def+." A White Mage should prioritize "Auto-Potion" (learned from the White Staff or Cure Staff) and "Turbo MP."
  • Reaction Abilities: "Counter" (various swords), "Strikeback" (various bows), and "First Aid" (various armor) are excellent defensive and offensive reactions.
  • Movement Abilities: "Move +1" (various boots like Dash Boots or Battle Boots) is invaluable for increasing battlefield mobility.

Efficient AP Farming

To speed up ability learning:

  • Equip AP-Boosting Gear: Items like the A-Potion (accessory) or certain weapons can grant bonus AP.
  • Target Weak Enemies: Engage in random encounters or low-difficulty missions to quickly rack up AP without risking your main party.
  • Focus Fire: Concentrate attacks on a single enemy with multiple units to maximize the AP gained from that kill.
  • The "Adaman Shell" Trick: Later in the game, if you encounter an Adaman Shell enemy, you can often surround it and repeatedly attack it without defeating it quickly, allowing your units to gain AP over many turns. This is particularly effective in missions with no turn limits.

Clan Skills & Perks

As your clan gains experience and completes missions, your Clan Level will increase. This unlocks various Clan Skills, which provide passive bonuses or open up new opportunities.

  • Accessing Clan Skills: From the World Map, select "Clan" then "Clan Skills." You'll see a tree of available skills.
  • Prioritize Early Clan Skills:
    • "Gather Gil": Essential for increasing your income, allowing you to purchase better equipment and recruit more members.
    • "Gather AP": Boosts the AP earned by all clan members, accelerating job mastery.
    • "Negotiate": Reduces prices at shops, saving you precious Gil.
    • "Appraise": Increases the selling price of items, another good source of income.
  • Unlocking Locations: Some Clan Skills are necessary to unlock new locations on the world map, providing access to new missions, shops, and recruitment opportunities. For example, "Jagd" skills are needed to access Jagd areas.

Managing Clan Morale & Laws

Your clan's morale is important, though less directly impactful than in other tactics games. More importantly, understanding and manipulating the Judge's Laws is critical for success.

  • Laws and Penalties: Before each battle, a Judge will declare a Law. Breaking this law results in a yellow card (minor penalty) or a red card (unit sent to jail). Units in jail cannot participate in battles until their sentence is served or a "Jail Card" is used.
  • Law Cards: These invaluable items allow you to influence the Judge's Laws.
    • Anti-Law Cards: Use these to cancel an unfavorable law for the current battle. For example, if the law is "No Sword," and your main damage dealer is a Soldier, use an "Anti-Sword" card.
    • Law Cards: Use these to impose a beneficial law. For instance, if you have many archers, use a "Bow Law" card to gain a bonus.
  • Acquiring Law Cards:
    • Mission Rewards: Many missions, particularly side quests, will reward you with various Law Cards.
    • Shops: Certain shops, especially later in the game, will sell specific Law Cards.
    • Stealing: Your Thief units can sometimes steal Law Cards from enemy units during battle.
  • Jail Cards: These cards immediately release a unit from jail. Keep a few on hand for emergencies. They are typically found as mission rewards or rarely in shops.

By diligently managing your clan's recruitment, job progression, skill development, and strategic use of Law Cards, you'll build an unstoppable force capable of conquering all of Ivalice.
