Monster Recruitment
Recruiting monsters in Final Fantasy Tactics Advance is a unique way to expand your clan's capabilities, offering powerful allies with distinct abilities. Unlike human units, monsters are not directly controlled in battle but can provide valuable items and support through the Poaching ability. Mastering monster recruitment and poaching is crucial for acquiring rare gear and maximizing your clan's potential.
The Poaching Mechanic
Poaching is the primary method for acquiring items from monsters. To poach a monster, you must first have a unit with the "Poach" ability equipped. This ability is learned by the Hunter job class. Once a Hunter has Poach, they can use it on a monster that has been reduced to critical HP (usually indicated by a flashing HP bar). Successfully poaching a monster removes it from the battlefield and grants you a specific item based on the monster type. There are two tiers of items you can receive from poaching: a common item and a rare item. The rare item has a lower chance of dropping but is often significantly more valuable.
Recruitment Steps
- Acquire a Hunter: Your first step is to get a unit capable of learning the Hunter job. Vieras are the only race that can become Hunters. Train a Viera in Archer abilities until they meet the requirements for Hunter.
- Learn Poach: Equip a weapon that teaches the "Poach" ability to your Hunter. The Ranger Bow is a common early-game option that teaches Poach. Ensure your Hunter masters this ability.
- Locate Desired Monsters: Monsters appear in various locations across Ivalice. Certain quests and random encounters will feature specific monster types. For example, Goblins are common in early-game areas like the Loch Vaan region, while more exotic monsters like Dragons appear in later, more challenging areas such as Jagd Dorsa or Muscadet.
- Weaken the Monster: In battle, carefully reduce the target monster's HP until it is in critical condition. Be mindful not to accidentally defeat it. Using weaker attacks or status effects like Sleep or Stop can help manage its HP.
- Execute Poach: Position your Hunter adjacent to the weakened monster and use the "Poach" ability. If successful, the monster will disappear, and you will receive an item.
- Check Your Loot: After the battle, visit a shop or your clan's item inventory to see what you've acquired. The item received will depend on the monster type and your luck.
Strategic Poaching Tips
- Save Before Poaching: Due to the random nature of rare item drops, it's highly recommended to save your game before a battle where you plan to poach a valuable monster. If you don't get the desired rare item, you can soft reset and try again.
- Target Specific Monsters: Different monsters yield different items. Research which monsters drop the items you need. For instance, certain Dragon types can drop powerful weapons or armor, while Flans often drop crafting materials.
- Use Status Effects: Applying status effects like Sleep, Stop, or Confuse can make it easier to control a monster's HP and position your Hunter for a successful Poach without accidentally defeating it.
- Multiple Hunters: If you're serious about farming rare items, consider training multiple Hunters. This increases your chances of poaching multiple monsters in a single battle and speeds up the process.
- "Monster Bank" Quests: Some quests specifically feature a high concentration of certain monster types, making them ideal for poaching runs. Keep an eye out for quests like "Goblin Guard" or "Dragon's Neck."
