Gil Farming & Economy
Gil is the lifeblood of your clan in Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. Without a steady income, you'll struggle to equip your units, purchase essential items, and even participate in certain missions. This section will detail various strategies to keep your coffers full, from early-game hustles to late-game economic dominance.
Early Game Gil Generation (Month 1-3)
In the initial stages of the game, your options for earning Gil are somewhat limited, but crucial for establishing a strong foundation.
- Mission Rewards: Prioritize missions that offer a decent Gil reward alongside their other benefits. Look for missions like "Wanted!" or "Poachers" which often provide a few hundred Gil.
- Selling Unneeded Equipment: As you acquire new weapons and armor, you'll inevitably find yourself with outdated gear. Don't hoard it! Sell off any equipment that no unit in your clan can use or that is significantly weaker than your current best. This is especially true for early-game items like the Broadsword or Bronze Armor once you've upgraded.
- Material Sales: Certain monster drops, while useful for crafting later, can be sold for a quick profit if you're desperate. Items like Tiny Flower, Rabbit Tail, or Magic Fruit can fetch a small sum. Be judicious, as some materials are rare and valuable for specific crafting recipes.
Mid-Game Economic Expansion (Month 4-8)
As your clan grows and you gain access to more diverse missions and abilities, your Gil-earning potential expands significantly.
The "Jelly" Strategy:
This is a classic and highly effective mid-game Gil farming method. It relies on exploiting the drops from specific monster types.
- Target Missions: Look for missions that feature Flans, Jellies, or other Ooze-type monsters. "Jelly Hunt" or "Flan Break" missions are ideal. These can often be found in areas like the Giza Plains or Sprohm.
- Equip for Stealing: Bring a Thief or two with the "Steal Item" ability. Equipping them with a weapon that boosts Speed (like a Khukuri) can be beneficial.
- The Grind:
- Engage the Ooze monsters.
- Use "Steal Item" repeatedly on them. They often carry valuable items like Jelly, Magic Fruit, or even Magic Cloth.
- Defeat the remaining enemies to complete the mission.
- Repeat the mission as many times as needed.
- Sell the Haul: Head to the nearest shop and sell all the collected Jellies and other stolen goods. These items sell for a respectable amount, and with enough repetitions, you can amass a significant amount of Gil.
Dispatch Missions & Item Acquisition:
Certain dispatch missions can yield valuable items that can either be used or sold.
- "Gather Materials" Missions: These missions, often found on the notice board, can bring back rare crafting materials. While some are best kept for crafting, others, if you have an abundance, can be sold for a good price.
- "Treasure Hunt" Missions: Occasionally, these missions will return with valuable equipment or accessories that you might not need, offering a good selling opportunity.
Late Game Gil Mastery (Month 9+)
By the late game, you should have a well-developed clan and access to the most lucrative opportunities.
High-Level Random Encounters:
Once your clan is strong, engaging in random encounters in high-level areas can be a consistent source of Gil and valuable drops. Areas like Jagd Dorsa or Muscadet often feature tougher enemies that drop more expensive items or a higher amount of Gil directly.
- Equip for Efficiency: Maximize your damage output to clear battles quickly. Units with powerful area-of-effect abilities (e.g., Black Mages with Firaga, Blizzaga, Thundaga) are excellent for this.
- Consider "Gil Snapper" Hunts: While rare, the "Gil Snapper" monster (found in certain random encounters or specific missions) drops a large amount of Gil upon defeat. Keep an eye out for these elusive creatures.
Crafting for Profit:
While often overlooked, crafting can be a powerful Gil-making tool if you know which items to focus on.
- Identify High-Value Craftables: Research which crafted items sell for the most Gil relative to the cost and rarity of their materials. Often, high-tier weapons and armor, or certain accessories, fall into this category.
- Gather Materials Efficiently: Use dispatch missions and targeted random encounters to gather the necessary materials. For example, if you're crafting a powerful sword, you might need Adamantite, which can be found in specific areas or through "Mine" dispatch missions.
- Craft and Sell: Craft the items and then sell them at the shop. The profit margin can be substantial, especially for items that require common materials but sell for a high price.
Auction House Exploitation:
The Auction House, while primarily for acquiring unique items and territories, can indirectly contribute to your Gil reserves.
- Sell Unwanted Territory Rewards: If you win a territory at auction and the reward item is not useful for your clan, sell it. Some unique items can fetch a high price.
- Strategic Bidding: While not a direct Gil-making strategy, winning territories can unlock new shops with better prices or unique items, which can indirectly save you Gil or provide better selling opportunities in the long run.
By consistently applying these strategies throughout your playthrough, you'll ensure your clan never faces a financial crisis and can always afford the best equipment and resources Ivalice has to offer.
