Glitches & Exploits
While Final Fantasy Tactics is a masterpiece, like many complex games of its era, it contains several unintended mechanics that You can leverage to their advantage. This section details some of the most impactful glitches and exploits, providing step-by-step instructions to help you master Ivalice with unconventional strategies.
JP Scroll Glitch (Original PS1 Version Only)
This powerful exploit allows you to duplicate any item that can be placed in the "Scroll" slot of a unit's equipment screen, most notably the rare JP Scroll. This can drastically accelerate your job progression.
- Requirements:
- A unit with the "Equip Change" reaction ability.
- A unit with the "Move-Find Item" support ability.
- At least one JP Scroll (or any other scroll-slot item you wish to duplicate).
- A battle where you can manipulate enemy units, ideally one with weak or easily incapacitated foes.
- Step-by-Step Guide:
- Equip the JP Scroll (or desired item) to a unit in their "Scroll" slot.
- Ensure the unit with the JP Scroll has the "Equip Change" reaction ability active.
- Engage in a battle.
- Have an enemy unit attack the unit holding the JP Scroll.
- If "Equip Change" activates, the unit will swap their equipped items. Crucially, the game sometimes duplicates the item in the scroll slot during this process.
- Defeat all enemies except one. Incapacitate the last enemy (e.g., put them to Sleep or Petrify them) to prevent them from acting.
- Position a unit with "Move-Find Item" adjacent to the square where the JP Scroll unit was standing when "Equip Change" activated.
- Use "Move-Find Item" on that square. There's a chance you will find a duplicate of the JP Scroll.
- Repeat steps 4-7 as many times as desired within the same battle. You can cycle through your units, having them attack the scroll-holder to trigger "Equip Change" repeatedly.
- After the battle, check your inventory. You should have multiple JP Scrolls.
- Strategy Tips:
- The success rate of "Equip Change" creating a duplicate isn't 100%, so patience is key.
- Battles with numerous weak enemies (like Mandalia Plains or Dorter Slums early on) are ideal for setting this up.
- Consider using a unit with high HP and Defense to hold the scroll, as they will be taking hits.
- This exploit works best on the original PlayStation version of Final Fantasy Tactics. Later versions (War of the Lions) may have patched this.
Ramza's Squire JP Exploit
This exploit allows Ramza to gain Job Points (JP) for his Squire job at an accelerated rate, making him incredibly versatile early in the game.
- Requirements:
- Ramza in his Squire job.
- The "Accumulate" ability learned (requires 80 JP in Squire).
- Any battle where Ramza can repeatedly use "Accumulate."
- Step-by-Step Guide:
- In any battle, select Ramza.
- Choose the "Accumulate" ability from his Squire skillset.
- Have Ramza use "Accumulate."
- Each successful use of "Accumulate" grants Ramza 10 JP for his Squire job.
- Repeat this process for as many turns as possible during a battle.
- To maximize efficiency, incapacitate all but one enemy unit (e.g., by putting them to Sleep, Petrify, or rendering them immobile) and then have your other units defend or heal while Ramza accumulates.
- Strategy Tips:
- This is particularly useful in early random encounters like Mandalia Plains or The Siedge Weald.
- Pair Ramza with a Mediator or Orator to use "Invite" on the last enemy, making them a temporary ally and removing the threat entirely while Ramza accumulates.
- Consider equipping Ramza with gear that boosts his Speed (e.g., Speed Save, Sprint Shoes) to get more turns for Accumulate.
- This allows Ramza to quickly learn powerful Squire abilities like "Guts" and "Tailwind," or to master Squire entirely, opening up advanced jobs faster.
Infinite Money Glitch (Sell/Buy Price Discrepancy)
This isn't a true "glitch" but an economic oversight that allows you to generate infinite Gil by exploiting the buy/sell price difference of certain items.
- Requirements:
- Access to a shop.
- A small amount of starting Gil.
- Step-by-Step Guide:
- Visit any shop in the game.
- Identify items where the "Sell" price is equal to or greater than the "Buy" price. While rare, some items (especially certain consumables or low-tier equipment) can have this property, or a very small difference that can be exploited with large quantities.
- The most common and effective item for this is the Potion. In many early shops, you can sell a Potion for the same price you buy it.
- Buy as many Potions as you can afford.
- Immediately sell all the Potions back to the shop.
- Repeat steps 4 and 5. Due to a rounding error or specific shop pricing, you will often find that you gain 1 Gil for every 100 Potions (or similar ratio) you buy and sell.
- While slow initially, this method allows you to accumulate vast sums of Gil over time.
- Strategy Tips:
- This exploit is most effective early in the game when Gil is scarce.
- It requires patience, as the Gil gain per transaction is minimal.
- Look for other items in shops that might have a similar buy/sell price discrepancy for faster gains, though Potions are the most reliable.
- This can be done at any shop, so you don't need to travel far.
