Blue Magic
Blue Magic is one of the most versatile and powerful magic types in Final Fantasy V. Unlike traditional Black or White Magic, Blue Magic spells are learned directly from monsters. To acquire a Blue Magic spell, a character equipped with the Blue Mage job must be present in the battle, and the monster must successfully cast the desired spell on your party. Crucially, the monster must then be defeated for the spell to be learned. Equipping the Learning ability (acquired at Blue Mage Job Level 1) on any character allows them to learn Blue Magic, regardless of their current job, making it incredibly flexible.
Early Game Blue Magic Acquisition
Don't wait to start collecting these invaluable spells! Here's how to get a head start:
- Goblin Punch: This is often the first Blue Magic you'll encounter.
- Monster: Goblin (found on the world map near the Wind Shrine, and in the Wind Shrine itself).
- Strategy: Simply encounter a Goblin and let it cast Goblin Punch. It's a single-target physical attack. Defeat the Goblin to learn.
- Vampire: A crucial early healing and damage spell.
- Monster: Dhorme Chimera (found in the North Mountain).
- Strategy: The Dhorme Chimera can be a tough early fight. It casts Vampire, which drains HP from one target. Focus on keeping your party healthy while waiting for it to cast the spell. Consider having a Knight with Guard or a Monk for high HP to tank hits.
- Aero: A wind-elemental magic attack.
- Monster: Moldwind (found in the Wind Shrine).
- Strategy: Moldwinds frequently cast Aero. This is a straightforward spell to learn.
- Flash: Inflicts Darkness on all enemies.
- Monster: Headless (found in the Ship Graveyard).
- Strategy: Headless enemies often use Flash. This spell can be incredibly useful for reducing enemy accuracy in later fights.
Mid-Game Blue Magic Essentials
As you progress, prioritize these powerful additions to your Blue Magic arsenal:
- Aqua Breath: A potent water-elemental attack.
- Monster: Dhorme Chimera (reappears in various locations, including the Ronka Ruins), or Hydra (found in the Underground Waterway).
- Strategy: This spell hits all enemies and is excellent for clearing groups. Be prepared for a longer fight against these monsters.
- Death Claw: Inflicts Paralysis and critical damage.
- Monster: Iron Claw (found in the Karnak Castle area, and later in the Library of the Ancients).
- Strategy: Iron Claws are dangerous. They often use Death Claw as a counter-attack or when low on HP. Be cautious and heal frequently.
- Lilliputian Axe: Shrinks enemies, reducing their physical attack.
- Monster: Mini Dragon (found in the Crescent Island area).
- Strategy: Mini Dragons are small but fierce. They cast Lilliputian Axe. This spell is fantastic for debuffing strong physical attackers.
- Dark Spark: Halves an enemy's current HP.
- Monster: Black Flame (found in the Fire-Powered Ship).
- Strategy: Black Flames are common in the Fire-Powered Ship. Dark Spark is a great utility spell for softening up high-HP targets.
Advanced Blue Magic & Strategies
These spells are game-changers and require careful planning to acquire:
- White Wind: Heals the party for the caster's current HP.
- Monster: White Dragon (found in the Drakenvale area).
- Strategy: White Dragons are formidable. They cast White Wind when their HP is low. You'll need to carefully manage their HP without defeating them too quickly. Consider using Mug or Steal to get items while waiting.
- Mighty Guard: Casts Protect and Shell on the entire party.
- Monster: Stingray (found in the Sunken Worus Tower, and later in the Great Trench).
- Strategy: This is arguably the best Blue Magic spell in the game. Stingrays are rare encounters. They cast Mighty Guard as a counter-attack or when their HP is low. Be patient, and ensure your Blue Mage (or character with Learning) survives the encounter.
- Level 5 Death: Instantly K.O.s all enemies whose level is a multiple of 5.
- Monster: Page 64 (found in the Library of the Ancients).
- Strategy: Page 64 will cast Level 5 Death. This spell is incredibly useful for specific encounters and farming, but remember it only works on enemies with levels that are multiples of 5.
- Magic Hammer: Drains MP from an enemy.
- Monster: Byblos (boss in the Library of the Ancients), or Pao (found in the Great Forest of Moore).
- Strategy: Magic Hammer is excellent for crippling magic-using enemies. Byblos will cast it during its boss fight.
General Tips for Blue Magic Hunters
- Equip Learning: Always have at least one character with the Learning ability equipped. It's a Job Level 1 ability for Blue Mages, so it's cheap to master.
- Control Damage: When trying to learn a spell that a monster casts when its HP is low, use weaker attacks or status effects to chip away at its health without accidentally defeating it.
- Reflect/Carbuncle: Some Blue Magic spells can be reflected. If a monster casts a beneficial spell (like White Wind) on itself, and you have Reflect active on your party, it might bounce to you. However, this is rare and often unreliable for learning.
- Berserk/Confusion: Be cautious with status effects like Berserk or Confusion, as they can prevent monsters from casting the desired spell.
- Save Frequently: Before attempting to learn a rare or difficult Blue Magic spell, save your game. This prevents losing progress if the monster doesn't cooperate or your party is wiped out.
While Final Fantasy V requires characters to be hit by enemy skills, Final Fantasy IX iterates on this mechanic by having Quina consume weakened foes to learn Blue Magic.
While Final Fantasy V requires a character to be hit by an ability, Final Fantasy X-2 evolved this mechanic through the Gun Mage’s Blue Bullet skill.
