Optional Summons

Summons are powerful allies that can be called upon by a Summoner. While some are obtained through the main story progression (such as Shiva and Ifrit), many of the most potent summons are found through optional quests or hidden locations. Collecting all optional summons is a rewarding endeavor that significantly enhances your party's combat capabilities, offering a diverse range of offensive, defensive, and utility spells.

World 1 Optional Summons

Siren

  • Location: Ship Graveyard
  • Acquisition: Defeat the boss Siren.
  • Effect: Lunar Eclipse – Inflicts various status ailments (Darkness, Poison, Silence, Mini, Toad) on all enemies. While not a damage-dealer, its ability to cripple multiple foes simultaneously can be invaluable in certain encounters.
  • Walkthrough:
    1. Progress through the Ship Graveyard until you reach the main deck area.
    2. You will encounter Siren as a mandatory boss battle.
    3. Boss Strategy (Siren): Siren is an Undead enemy, making her vulnerable to healing spells like Cure or items like Phoenix Down, which deal damage to her. She can also be instantly defeated by casting Raise. If you prefer a traditional fight, exploit her weakness to Fire magic. She frequently uses Charm, which can turn your characters against each other, so equip Ribbons if you have them, or be ready with Esuna/Unicorn.
    4. Upon defeating Siren, you will automatically acquire the Siren summon.

Ramuh

  • Location: Forest near Istory Village
  • Acquisition: Speak to the old man in the forest.
  • Effect: Judgment Bolt – Deals powerful Lightning-elemental magic damage to all enemies. Essential for exploiting lightning weaknesses.
  • Walkthrough:
    1. After obtaining the Fire Ship and gaining access to the northern continent, head to Istory Village.
    2. From Istory Village, travel northeast into the nearby forest.
    3. Wander around the forest until you encounter an old man. This is Ramuh in human form.
    4. Talk to him repeatedly (usually 5 times) until he challenges you to a battle to prove your worth.
    5. Boss Strategy (Ramuh): Ramuh is a relatively straightforward fight. He uses Lightning-elemental attacks. Equip any gear that boosts Lightning resistance if available. Focus on physical attacks or non-lightning elemental magic. He has no particular weaknesses.
    6. Upon defeating Ramuh, he will acknowledge your strength and grant you his summon.

World 2 Optional Summons

Golem

  • Location: Drakenvale
  • Acquisition: Protect Golem from attacking monsters.
  • Effect: Earth Wall – Creates a barrier that absorbs a certain amount of physical damage for the party. This is an incredibly useful defensive summon, especially against bosses with strong physical attacks.
  • Walkthrough:
    1. After obtaining the airship in World 2, fly to Drakenvale, located on the central continent.
    2. Navigate through Drakenvale until you encounter two Earth Dragons attacking Golem.
    3. You will immediately enter a battle where Golem is a guest character. Your objective is to defeat the two Earth Dragons before they defeat Golem.
    4. Battle Strategy (Protect Golem): The Earth Dragons are vulnerable to Wind and Water magic. They can hit hard, so focus your attacks on one at a time. Golem has a decent amount of HP, but don't take too long. Use your strongest abilities.
    5. Once the Earth Dragons are defeated, Golem will thank you and join your summon roster.

Catoblepas

  • Location: Cave of the Catoblepas (Southern Continent)
  • Acquisition: Defeat the boss Catoblepas.
  • Effect: Demon Eye – Inflicts Petrify on all enemies. This can instantly remove dangerous foes from battle, though it has a lower success rate on bosses.
  • Walkthrough:
    1. In World 2, fly your airship to the Southern Continent.
    2. Locate a small cave entrance on this continent. This is the Cave of the Catoblepas.
    3. Navigate through the short cave until you reach Catoblepas.
    4. Boss Strategy (Catoblepas): Catoblepas is a powerful beast that uses physical attacks and can cast Demon Eye on your party, attempting to Petrify them. Equip Ribbons or use Esuna/Unicorn to cure Petrify. He is weak to Wind-elemental attacks. Use Aero spells or equip Wind-elemental weapons if possible.
    5. Upon defeating Catoblepas, you will receive the summon.

Carbuncle

  • Location: Phantom Village
  • Acquisition: Defeat the boss Carbuncle.
  • Effect: Ruby Light – Casts Reflect on all party members, bouncing most magic spells back at the caster. An incredibly potent defensive summon against magic-heavy enemies.
  • Walkthrough:
    1. In World 2, after the events at the Great Forest of Moore, you will gain access to the Phantom Village (an illusionary town).
    2. In the Phantom Village, locate the house with a hidden passage (often behind a bookshelf or fireplace).
    3. Follow the hidden path, which will lead you to Carbuncle.
    4. Boss Strategy (Carbuncle): Carbuncle is a unique boss. He starts with Reflect active, bouncing all your magic back. Do NOT use magic attacks on him initially. Focus on physical attacks. After taking enough damage, he will cast Haste on himself and then begin casting powerful magic spells. Once Reflect wears off, you can use your own magic against him. He has no elemental weaknesses.
    5. Defeating Carbuncle grants you his summon.

Leviathan

  • Location: Sunken Worus Tower
  • Acquisition: Defeat the boss Leviathan.
  • Effect: Tidal Wave – Deals massive Water-elemental magic damage to all enemies. One of the strongest offensive summons, crucial for enemies weak to Water.
  • Walkthrough:
    1. After the Sunken Worus Tower rises from the sea in World 2, fly your airship to it.
    2. Navigate through the tower. You will eventually reach the top where Leviathan awaits.
    3. Boss Strategy (Leviathan): Leviathan is a formidable Water-elemental boss. He uses powerful Water-based attacks like Tidal Wave. Equip Water-resistant gear (like Coral Rings) if you have any. He is weak to Lightning-elemental attacks. Ramuh's Judgment Bolt will be highly effective, as will Thundaga. Be prepared for a tough fight, as he has high HP and damage output.
    4. Upon defeating Leviathan, you will earn his summon.

Odin

  • Location: Ancient Library
  • Acquisition: Defeat the boss Odin within a time limit.
  • Effect: Zantetsuken – A non-elemental attack that has a chance to instantly defeat all enemies. If it fails, he uses Gungnir, a single-target physical attack. Highly effective for clearing groups of weaker enemies.
  • Walkthrough:
    1. In World 2, after the events at the Library of the Ancients, return to the Ancient Library.
    2. Head to the basement level. You will find Odin here.
    3. Boss Strategy (Odin): This is a timed battle! You have one minute to defeat Odin. He is a powerful opponent who uses physical attacks and can cast Zantetsuken on your party. Focus all your strongest attacks on him. Use abilities like Rapid Fire, Spellblade (with a strong element like Fire or Thunder), or high-level Black Magic. Don't waste turns on buffs or debuffs unless they are quick to cast and significantly boost your damage. He has no specific elemental weakness, so raw damage is key.
    4. If you defeat him within the time limit, Odin will join you. If you fail, you can try again.

World 3 Optional Summons

Bahamut

  • Location: North Mountain
  • Acquisition: Defeat the boss Bahamut. Requires the Black Chocobo.
  • Effect: Mega Flare – Deals immense non-elemental magic damage to all enemies. One of the most powerful offensive summons in the game.
  • Walkthrough:
    1. After obtaining the Black Chocobo in World 3 (which allows flight over mountains), fly to the North Mountain.
    2. Land on the mountain and navigate to the peak.
    3. You will find Bahamut waiting for you.
    4. Boss Strategy (Bahamut): Bahamut is the King of Dragons and a very tough opponent. He uses powerful physical attacks and his signature Mega Flare, which deals massive non-elemental damage to your entire party. Equip Dragon Lances/Swords if you have them, as he is a Dragon-type enemy. Shell and Protect can help mitigate damage. Use your strongest offensive abilities and healing spells. He has no elemental weaknesses, so focus on raw damage.
    5. Defeating Bahamut earns you his summon.

Phoenix

  • Location: Phoenix Tower
  • Acquisition: Complete the Phoenix Tower dungeon.
  • Effect: Rebirth Flame – Deals Fire-elemental magic damage to all enemies and revives all fallen party members (with 1 HP). A unique summon offering both offense and crucial revival.
  • Walkthrough:
    1. In World 3, locate the Phoenix Tower, a prominent structure in the desert.
    2. Enter the tower. This dungeon is unique: every step you take will trigger a battle with a random encounter. You cannot avoid these battles.
    3. The tower has 30 floors. On every 10th floor (10, 20, 30), you will find a switch. Activating these switches is crucial.
    4. After activating the third switch on the 30th floor, you will face the boss.
    5. Boss Strategy (Phoenix): The "boss" of Phoenix Tower is actually a series of battles against various enemies, culminating in a fight against a powerful enemy (often a Red Dragon or similar). Be prepared for a long dungeon with constant combat. Conserve MP and use abilities that restore it. The final battle isn't a traditional boss with a unique name, but a powerful regular enemy.
    6. Upon successfully navigating the tower and activating all switches, Phoenix will join your party.

Each optional summon brings a unique strategic advantage to your party. Experiment with their effects and integrate them into your battle plans to conquer the most formidable foes in Final Fantasy V!
