Phoenix Tower

The Phoenix Tower is an optional, but highly rewarding, dungeon that becomes accessible later in the game. It is home to the legendary Phoenix summon and offers some valuable treasures. Be prepared for a unique challenge, as the tower's mechanics are unlike any other dungeon you've encountered.

Preparation

Before entering, ensure your party is well-equipped. Here are some recommendations:

  • Jobs: A party with a strong mix of physical attackers (Knight, Monk, Samurai) and magic users (Black Mage, White Mage, Summoner) is ideal. Consider bringing a Thief for the "Dash" ability, which is invaluable here.
  • Abilities:
    • Dash: Absolutely essential for navigating the tower efficiently.
    • Steal: Useful for acquiring rare items from some of the tower's unique enemies.
    • Control: Can be used to make enemies attack each other, saving your party's HP/MP.
    • Time Magic (Haste/Slow): Can turn the tide in battles against faster enemies.
    • White Magic (Cure/Raise/Esuna): Standard healing and status recovery are always important.
  • Items: Stock up on Potions, Hi-Potions, Ethers, and Phoenix Downs. Status-healing items like Antidotes and Eye Drops are also recommended.

Tower Mechanics: The "Dash" Challenge

The Phoenix Tower is infamous for its "Dash" mechanic. Every step you take while walking normally will trigger a random encounter. To avoid these constant battles and conserve resources, you *must* use the Thief's "Dash" ability (or equip the "Dash" ability learned from the Thief job) to move around the tower. Dashing prevents random encounters, allowing you to explore and reach objectives without interruption.

Walkthrough

Ground Floor

  1. Upon entering, you'll find yourself in a central chamber. There are four staircases leading up.
  2. Take the staircase directly in front of you (north).

Upper Floors (General Strategy)

The Phoenix Tower consists of multiple floors, each with a similar layout: a central platform and four connecting paths leading to other sections or staircases. Your goal is to navigate these floors, activate specific switches, and eventually reach the summit.

  • Always Dash: As mentioned, always use "Dash" to move between platforms and staircases to avoid unnecessary encounters.
  • Explore Thoroughly: Each floor may contain hidden passages or treasure chests. Don't rush!
  • Switches: Many floors will have switches that open new paths or activate mechanisms. Interact with everything you can.

Specific Floor Navigation & Items

The tower's layout can be a bit disorienting due to its repetitive nature. Follow these steps carefully:

  1. Floor 2: From the first staircase, head to the northwest path. You'll find a chest containing a Phoenix Down. Return to the central platform and take the northeast path to the next staircase.
  2. Floor 3: On this floor, head south. You'll find a hidden path leading to a chest with an Elixir. Return and take the west path to the next staircase.
  3. Floor 4: This floor has a visible switch on the central platform. Activate it. This will open a path on a lower floor. Now, take the east path to the next staircase.
  4. Floor 5: Head north. There's a chest containing a Ribbon. This is an excellent accessory, offering protection against many status ailments. Equip it immediately on a key magic user or healer. Return and take the south path to the next staircase.
  5. Floor 6: You'll notice a new path has opened up due to the switch you activated on Floor 4. Take this newly opened path to a staircase leading down.
  6. Floor 5 (Revisited): You'll land on a different section of Floor 5. Head east to find a chest with a Holy Water. Then, take the staircase leading up.
  7. Floor 7: This floor has another switch. Activate it. This will open the final path to the summit. Take the west path to the next staircase.
  8. Floor 8 (Summit Approach): From here, you'll see a clear path leading to the very top of the tower.

Summit: Phoenix

At the summit, you will encounter the legendary fire bird, Phoenix. This is not a battle, but a scene that will grant you the Phoenix Summon Materia. This summon is incredibly powerful, dealing fire damage to all enemies and reviving a fallen ally with a portion of their HP. It's an invaluable addition to your Summoner's arsenal.

Exiting the Tower

Once you have obtained the Phoenix Summon, you can use a "Teleport" spell or an "Exit" item to leave the tower instantly. Alternatively, you can retrace your steps, remembering to use "Dash" to avoid encounters.
