Side Quests: Optional Dungeons
While the main quest will lead you through many perilous lands, Final Fantasy V offers several optional dungeons that reward the intrepid adventurer with powerful equipment, rare spells, and invaluable experience. These challenges are often more difficult than the main story's offerings, so ensure your party is well-equipped and your Job levels are high before attempting them.
The Sunken Wreck (World 2)
Accessible after obtaining the Submarine, the Sunken Wreck is located in the ocean south of Crescent Island in World 2. This dungeon is home to some unique treasures and a formidable boss.
- Location: South of Crescent Island, World 2, accessible via Submarine.
- Recommended Level: 25+
- Walkthrough:
- Upon entering, navigate the initial flooded corridors. Watch out for the strong current in some areas; you'll need to time your movements.
- Head right from the entrance to find a chest containing a Power Armlet.
- Proceed through the central path. You'll encounter several undead enemies, so equip Phoenix Downs or use healing spells like Cura.
- In the northern section, you'll find a room with multiple doors. The westernmost door leads to a chest with a Coral Sword.
- The easternmost door leads to a path that eventually takes you to the boss chamber.
- Boss: King Hydra
- Strategy: King Hydra is a water-elemental boss. Equip your party with Coral Rings or other water-resistant gear if you have them. Fire-based attacks (Firaga, Fira, or Fire scrolls from a Ninja) are highly effective. Physical attackers should focus on dealing consistent damage. Be wary of its "Aqua Breath" attack, which can hit the entire party for significant damage. A White Mage with Cura/Curaga is essential.
- Reward: Upon defeat, you'll receive the Flame Ring, a powerful accessory that absorbs fire damage.
The Sealed Castle of Kuzar (World 3)
This ancient castle, hidden in the mountains of World 3, holds the legendary 12 Sealed Weapons. To unlock them, you'll need to defeat powerful guardians. This is a significant undertaking and best tackled towards the end of the game.
- Location: Northern part of the main continent in World 3, accessible by airship.
- Recommended Level: 40+
- Walkthrough:
- Enter the castle and proceed to the main hall. You'll see twelve pedestals, each corresponding to a sealed weapon.
- Interacting with a pedestal will initiate a battle with its guardian. You can choose which weapon to attempt first, but some guardians are significantly tougher than others.
- Each guardian battle is a unique challenge. Ensure your party has a diverse set of abilities (Black Magic, White Magic, Blue Magic, Summons, physical attacks, etc.) to adapt.
- Guardians & Rewards:
- Omega: Guardian of the Rune Axe. A notoriously difficult optional boss. Requires precise timing and powerful magic. Consider using Reflect on your party to bounce its magic back.
- Shinryu: Guardian of the Ragnarok sword. Another incredibly tough boss. Equipping the Dragon Lance and using Jump with a Dragoon can be effective. Protect against its powerful tidal wave attack.
- Apocalypse: Guardian of the Holy Lance.
- Catastrophe: Guardian of the Excalibur sword.
- Gilgamesh (Exdeath's Castle): While not strictly part of Kuzar, defeating Gilgamesh in Exdeath's Castle (World 3) is a prerequisite for some of the Kuzar weapons and rewards the Genji Glove.
- Other guardians protect the Masamune, Assassin's Dagger, Sage's Staff, Apollo's Harp, Earth Bell, Fire Whip, and Water Scroll. Each requires a tailored strategy.
- General Strategy for Guardians: Many guardians are vulnerable to specific elemental attacks or status effects. Use the !Scan ability or a Bard's "Peep" to identify weaknesses. Equipping Ribbon or other status-protecting accessories is highly recommended.
The Pyramid of Moore (World 3)
This ancient pyramid holds secrets and powerful monsters. While not entirely optional as you pass through it during the main story, there are many hidden paths and treasures that are easily missed.
- Location: Desert region in World 3, east of Moore Forest.
- Recommended Level: 35+
- Walkthrough (Optional Areas):
- After the main story segment, return to the Pyramid. On the first floor, look for a hidden passage on the eastern wall that leads to a secret room. Here you'll find a chest containing a Thief's Knife.
- On the third floor, there's a section with sandfalls. Carefully navigate these to reach a hidden platform with a chest containing a Lamia's Harp.
- On the fifth floor, after the main path, explore the eastern side for a hidden switch that opens a new path. This leads to a room with a chest holding a Black Robe.
- The very top of the pyramid, accessible after the main story, contains a powerful optional enemy.
- Optional Boss: Mummified Dragon
- Location: Topmost floor of the Pyramid, after the main storyline.
- Strategy: This undead dragon is vulnerable to healing spells (like Curaga) and fire magic. Equip Flame Rings if you have them, as it uses fire-based attacks. A Knight's "Guard" ability can protect allies from its physical attacks.
- Reward: Defeating it yields a significant amount of experience and gil.
Exploring these optional dungeons will not only strengthen your party but also deepen your understanding of Final Fantasy V's rich world. Good luck, adventurers!
