Missable Items and Content
Final Fantasy V, like many classic RPGs, contains a fair amount of content that can be permanently missed if you're not careful. This section details key items, events, and opportunities that are time-sensitive or require specific actions before advancing the story. Pay close attention to these warnings to ensure a 100% completion run!
World 1 Missables
- Goblin Punch (Blue Magic): This powerful early-game Blue Magic spell can only be learned from the Goblin enemy. Goblins are found in the Wind Shrine area and the surrounding plains.
- Strategy: Encounter Goblins and wait for them to use "Goblin Punch" on one of your characters. Ensure the character has the "Learning" ability equipped (from the Blue Mage job) to acquire the spell. If you leave the Wind Shrine area without learning it, Goblins become much rarer or disappear entirely from accessible areas.
- Potion from the Old Man: In the Pirate's Hideout, after defeating Karlabos, speak to the old man in the back room. He will give you a Potion. This is a minor item but technically missable if you proceed without talking to him.
- Mythril Knife: Located in a chest in the Ship Graveyard. Ensure you explore all shipwrecks thoroughly before proceeding to the boss. Once you leave the Ship Graveyard, you cannot return.
- Elf Mantle: Found in a hidden passage in the North Mountain. This excellent evade-boosting accessory is easy to overlook.
- Location: After the segment where you push a boulder to create a path, look for a seemingly dead-end cliff face. There's a hidden path leading to a chest containing the Elf Mantle.
- Garkimasra (Monster-in-a-box): In the Karnak Castle, after the fire starts, you have a limited time to explore. One of the chests contains a Garkimasra. Defeating it yields a valuable item (often a Flame Rod or similar). If you run out of time, the chest is lost.
- Strategy: Prioritize opening all chests in Karnak Castle before the timer runs out. Save frequently!
- Moonring Blade: This unique throwing weapon is found in the Ancient Library. It's in a chest on the upper floors. grab it before completing the library's events and moving on.
World 2 Missables
- Submarine (Optional Vehicle): While not an item, the Submarine is an optional vehicle that significantly expands exploration. You acquire it by completing a side quest involving the Sunken Worus Tower.
- Steps: After gaining access to the world map in World 2, head to the Sunken Worus Tower (located underwater near where Worus was). Navigate the tower and defeat the boss within to gain control of the Submarine. If you neglect this, you'll miss out on several underwater locations and treasures.
- Chicken Knife / Brave Blade: This is a mutually exclusive choice in the Phantom Village.
- Chicken Knife: Awarded if you flee from 255 battles or more. It's a powerful weapon that gets stronger the more you flee.
- Brave Blade: Awarded if you flee from 0 battles. It's a powerful weapon that gets stronger the less you flee.
- Decision Point: The choice is made when you interact with the elder in the Phantom Village. Your battle flee count is checked at this point. Decide which weapon you prefer based on your playstyle before entering the village.
- Mirage Vest: Found in the Phantom Village. This excellent piece of armor grants permanent Image status. It's in a chest that's easily overlooked amidst the village's illusions.
- Excalipur: This cursed sword is found in the Fork Tower. It's in a chest on the magic-sealed side of the tower. While not a "good" item, it's required for 100% item completion. Ensure you grab it before defeating the bosses and collapsing the tower.
World 3 Missables
- Odin (Summon): Odin is an optional summon found in the Great Forest of Moore. You must defeat him in battle within a time limit to acquire his summon materia.
- Location: Enter the Great Forest of Moore and proceed until you find a hidden path leading to a small clearing. Odin will challenge you there.
- Strategy: Odin has a 60-second timer. You need to deal enough damage to defeat him before time runs out. High-damage abilities and quick actions are key. If you fail, you can retry. However, if you leave the forest without acquiring him, he's gone for good.
- Leviathan (Summon): Leviathan is another optional summon. He is found in the Sunken Worus Tower (revisited in World 3).
- Location: With the Submarine, return to the Sunken Worus Tower. Leviathan is the boss of this revisited dungeon.
- Strategy: Be prepared for a tough fight. Ensure your party is well-equipped and has strong magic or physical attacks. Like Odin, if you leave the tower without defeating him, you lose the chance to acquire him.
- Bahamut (Summon): Bahamut is an optional summon found on the North Mountain.
- Location: Fly your airship to the North Mountain. Bahamut will be waiting at the summit.
- Strategy: Bahamut is a powerful boss. Prepare for a long battle with strong defensive and offensive spells. Defeat him to earn his summon.
- Mover (Enemy Skill): The Mover enemy, found in the Interdimensional Rift (specifically the Void section), can cast "Delta Attack." This is a powerful Blue Magic spell that inflicts Petrify on all targets.
- Strategy: Encounter Movers in the Void. Have a character with "Learning" equipped and wait for them to use Delta Attack. This is one of the last Blue Magic spells you can acquire, and the Interdimensional Rift is a point of no return once you face the final boss.
