Battle Basics
Final Fantasy VI features a robust turn-based combat system where players strategically command their party members against several enemies. Battles occur randomly when traversing the world map, dungeons, or specific areas. Each character and enemy has a turn based on their Speed stat, and players must choose actions such as attacking, using magic, items, or special abilities. Understanding the flow of combat and the strengths of your party is crucial for overcoming the game's numerous challenges.
The battle screen displays your active party members and the enemies they face. At the top of the screen, a timeline indicates the order in which characters and enemies will act. Players select actions for each party member during their turn. Available commands typically include 'Attack' (physical strike), 'Magic' (casting spells), 'Item' (using consumables), and unique character-specific abilities. Some characters also have commands like 'Steal' (Locke), 'Tools' (Edgar), 'Blitz' (Sabin), or 'Runic' (Celes), which offer specialized combat options.
Defeating enemies yields experience points (EXP) for leveling up, Gil (currency), and sometimes items. Leveling up increases a character's stats, such as HP, MP, Strength, Magic Power, and Defense, making them more effective in combat. Managing your party's HP and MP is vital, as running out of HP results in a character being KO'd (Knocked Out). If the entire party is KO'd, it's game over, and you'll return to your last save point.
