Beyond the main narrative of Final Fantasy VI lies a wealth of engaging side quests and optional content that enrich the game's world and provide valuable rewards. These diversions allow players to further develop their characters, uncover hidden lore, and test their skills against formidable challenges that go beyond the primary quest to defeat Kefka.

The World of Ruin, in particular, opens up a vast array of optional content. Players are encouraged to seek out their lost party members, and in doing so, often stumble upon unique dungeons and tasks. For instance, Sabin's training quest involves a challenging battle against the Phantom Train. Strago's quest to learn all "Lore" abilities requires players to seek out specific monsters across the world and use Strago's "Lore" command to learn their unique skills. The Coliseum offers a place to test your party's strength in a series of escalating battles, with valuable prizes awarded for victory.

Several powerful Espers are also obtained through side quests. These include Quetzalli, Alexander, Odin/Raiden, Bahamut, Ragnarok, Leviathan, Cactuar, and Gilgamesh. Each of these Espers requires specific actions or exploration to acquire, often involving challenging boss fights or navigating intricate dungeons. The Cultists' Tower is another significant optional dungeon, housing a powerful boss and offering unique rewards. Monster hunting in areas like the Dinosaur Forest is essential for Gau's Rage abilities and for obtaining rare items.
