World of Ruin Walkthrough

Guide through Final Fantasy VI's World of Ruin. Recruit allies and tackle Kefka's altered world map in this open-ended act of the RPG.

World of Ruin Walkthrough

The World of Ruin marks the second major act of Final Fantasy VI, presenting a vastly changed landscape after Kefka's cataclysm. This phase of the game is characterized by its open-world des, allowing players to explore freely, recruit scattered party members, and tackle objectives in a non-linear fashion.

Upon entering the World of Ruin, the world map is drastically altered. Many familiar locations are destroyed or inaccessible, and new areas have emerged. The primary goal is to reunite your lost party members and gather the necessary strength and resources to confront Kefka and restore the world. This involves traveling to various towns and dungeons, often in an order of your choosing.

Key areas and objectives in the World of Ruin include:

  • Finding Lost Party Members: Each character has a specific location or quest associated with their recruitment. Prioritize finding your favorites or those with abilities crucial for exploration and combat.
  • Exploring New Dungeons: The World of Ruin introduces new dungeons filled with powerful enemies, unique items, and challenging puzzles. Examples include the Phoenix Cave (if not cleared in the World of Balance), the Cultist's Tower, and Kefka's Tower itself.
  • Acquiring Powerful Magic and Equipment: This is the prime time to hunt for the most potent Espers, learn ultimate spells like Ultima, and find legendary equipment.
  • Optional Bosses and Side Quests: The World of Ruin is rich with optional content, such as the Dragon's Den, the Colosseum, and various monster-hunting quests, which offer significant rewards.

Recommended Exploration Order (Flexible):

  1. Initial Exploration: Begin by exploring the immediate surroundings of the starting town (Narshe) and begin recruiting nearby characters.
  2. Western Continent: Focus on areas like South Figaro, Nikeah, and Figaro Castle to recruit characters and gather resources.
  3. Eastern Continent: Explore towns like Jidoor, Kohlingen, and Mobliz, and tackle dungeons like the Ancient's Tower.
  4. Optional Dungeons: As you gather more party members and power, delve into challenging optional areas like the Phoenix Cave, Cultist's Tower, and the Dragon's Den.
  5. Kefka's Tower: Once you feel your party is sufficiently prepared, head to Kefka's Tower for the final confrontation.

Throughout your journey in the World of Ruin, pay close attention to the abilities of your recruited party members. Characters like Strago (Lore), Relm (Sketch/Control), and Gau (Rage) offer unique utility that can be invaluable for overcoming specific challenges. Don't hesitate to experiment with different party compositions to find what works best for each situation.
