Inventory Management
Effective inventory management is crucial for success in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, allowing you to stay prepared for challenging encounters, maximize your Gil, and efficiently progress through the game. Unlike some RPGs with strict inventory limits, Rebirth offers a generous capacity, but strategic organization and timely sales are still key.
Consumables: Healing & Battle Aids
Your consumable inventory is your lifeline in combat. Always maintain a healthy stock of essential items. You can purchase these from various vendors, often found near Chocobo Stables, Rest Stops, and major settlements like Kalm, Junon, and Costa del Sol.
- Potions/Hi-Potions/Mega-Potions: Your primary source of HP recovery. Prioritize carrying Hi-Potions and Mega-Potions as you progress, as their healing output becomes more vital against tougher foes.
- Ethers/Turbo Ethers: Essential for MP recovery, especially for magic-heavy characters like Aerith and your primary healer. Keep a good supply, particularly before boss battles.
- Phoenix Downs: Revive fallen party members. These are absolutely non-negotiable. Always aim to have at least 5-10 on hand. Purchase them from any general store.
- Antidotes/Eye Drops/Echo Grass: Status ailment cures. While less critical than HP/MP recovery, having a few of each can save you from debilitating effects, especially in areas like the Grasslands where Poisonous Toads are common.
- Grenades/Molotov Cocktails: Offensive consumables that can help pressure enemies or deal area-of-effect damage. Useful in the early game or for specific enemy weaknesses.
Strategy: Set your Item Shortcuts (accessed via the main menu) for quick access to your most frequently used consumables during combat. Typically, this includes a Potion variant, an Ether, and a Phoenix Down.
Key Items: Story & Progression
Key Items are automatically stored in a separate section of your inventory and do not count towards any capacity limits. These are vital for story progression, side quests, and unlocking new areas.
- Chocobo Whistle: Acquired early in Chapter 2, essential for calling your Chocobo in designated areas.
- Transmuter Chip: Found throughout the world, these chips unlock new crafting recipes for the Item Transmuter. Always keep an eye out for these.
- Regional Data: Collected from activating Remnawave Towers and completing World Intel. These are crucial for unlocking new areas on the map and progressing regional completion.
Strategy: Regularly check your Key Items to remind yourself of current objectives or to see if you've acquired something that might help with a lingering side quest.
Materials: Crafting & Selling
Materials are gathered from the environment, dropped by enemies, or found in chests. They serve two primary purposes: crafting via the Item Transmuter and selling for Gil.
- Common Materials: Things like Planet's Blessing, Beast Bone, and Iron Ore are abundant. While useful for early crafting, you'll accumulate them quickly.
- Rare Materials: Items such as Mythril Ore, Emerald, or specific monster parts (e.g., Gigantoad Tongue) are often needed for higher-tier equipment or more potent consumables.
Strategy:
- Craft First: Before selling, always check your Item Transmuter recipes. Prioritize crafting new gear, accessories, or powerful consumables like Mega-Potions or Turbo Ethers if you have the necessary materials.
- Sell Excess: Once you've crafted what you need, sell off any excess common materials. Keep a reasonable stack (e.g., 20-30 of each common material) and sell the rest. Rare materials should generally be hoarded until you know exactly what you need them for. Vendors at any general store will happily take your surplus.
- Monitor Crafting Needs: As you progress through chapters like "A New Journey Begins" (Chapter 2) and "Deeper into Darkness" (Chapter 3), new crafting recipes will become available. Always check these to see which materials you should prioritize keeping.
Equipment: Weapons, Armor, & Accessories
Your equipment inventory holds all your weapons, armor, and accessories. While you can hold many pieces, only the equipped items provide benefits.
- Weapons: Each character has multiple unique weapons, often found in purple chests or purchased from vendors. Each weapon has different stats and unique Weapon Abilities.
- Armor: Provides defense and magic defense. Like weapons, armor can be found or bought.
- Accessories: Offer a wide range of passive bonuses, from stat boosts to resistance against status effects. Examples include the Power Wristguard for attack or the Safety Bit for instant KO immunity.
Strategy:
- Equip Best: Always ensure your active party members have the best available equipment for their roles.
- Weapon Abilities: Master Weapon Abilities by using them enough times in combat. Once mastered, the ability can be used with any weapon, making older weapons still valuable for their unique skills.
- Sell Obsolete Gear: Once a weapon's ability is mastered, or if you acquire significantly better armor/accessories, you can safely sell the older, less useful pieces for Gil. Don't hold onto gear you'll never use again.
