Character Abilities & Limit Breaks
Mastering your party's unique abilities and devastating Limit Breaks is crucial for success in Final Fantasy VII Remake. This section will detail each character's core mechanics, provide strategic advice for their effective use, and guide you on how to unlock and maximize their potential.
Understanding Abilities
Abilities are special attacks or actions that consume ATB (Active Time Battle) charges. Each character has a unique set of abilities tied to their equipped weapon. Experimenting with different weapons not only changes your character's stats but also grants access to new abilities, which can be permanently learned once their proficiency is maxed out.
Cloud Strife
- Braver: Cloud's iconic leaping attack. Deals significant damage to a single enemy. Best used against staggered foes for maximum impact. Unlocked with the Buster Sword (default).
- Focused Thrust: A powerful lunge that deals damage and rapidly increases an enemy's stagger gauge. Essential for breaking tough enemies. Unlocked with the Iron Blade.
- Triple Slash: Cloud performs three quick slashes in an arc, hitting multiple enemies. Excellent for crowd control. Unlocked with the Hardedge.
- Counterstance: Cloud adopts a defensive stance. If attacked, he retaliates with a powerful counter. Requires precise timing. Unlocked with the Twin Stinger.
- Blade Burst: Unleashes a burst of energy from Cloud's sword, damaging enemies in a small area. Unlocked with the Mythril Saber.
- Infinity's End: Cloud's most powerful single-target ability. Deals massive damage, especially to staggered enemies. Unlocked with the Organics.
Strategy Tip: Cloud's Punisher Mode (activated by pressing Triangle) significantly boosts his melee damage and allows him to counter basic attacks. Combine Punisher Mode with abilities like Focused Thrust to quickly build stagger, then unleash Braver or Infinity's End.
Barret Wallace
- Focused Shot: Barret charges and fires a powerful shot that deals damage and rapidly increases an enemy's stagger gauge. Unlocked with the Gatling Gun (default).
- Overcharge: Barret overcharges his gun arm, dealing massive damage to a single target. Has a cooldown after use. Unlocked with the Gatling Gun (default).
- Maximum Fury: Barret unleashes a barrage of bullets, dealing continuous damage to a single target. Excellent for sustained damage. Unlocked with the Light Machine Gun.
- Steelskin: Barret temporarily reduces incoming physical damage. Useful for tanking hits. Unlocked with the Big Bertha.
- Lifesaver: Barret takes a portion of damage intended for allies. Crucial for protecting squishier party members. Unlocked with the Steel Pincers.
- Smash: Barret slams his gun arm into the ground, creating a shockwave that damages nearby enemies. Unlocked with the EKG Cannon.
Strategy Tip: Barret excels at ranged damage and tanking. Use Overcharge and Maximum Fury for high damage output, and don't hesitate to activate Lifesaver when a party member is in danger, especially against powerful boss attacks.
Tifa Lockhart
- Divekick: Tifa leaps and delivers a powerful kick from above. Unlocked with the Leather Gloves (default).
- Focused Strike: Tifa delivers a powerful blow that deals damage and rapidly increases an enemy's stagger gauge. Unlocked with the Metal Knuckles.
- Whirlwind Uppercut: Tifa performs an uppercut that launches enemies into the air. Great for interrupting attacks or setting up aerial combos. Unlocked with the Sonic Strikers.
- Starshower: Tifa unleashes a flurry of rapid punches. Can be chained into other abilities for extended combos. Unlocked with the Feathered Gloves.
- True Strike: Tifa delivers a devastating blow that significantly increases an enemy's stagger percentage. Use immediately after an enemy is staggered. Unlocked with the Mythril Claws.
- Chi Trap: Tifa sets a trap that damages enemies who step on it. Good for area denial or setting up damage. Unlocked with the Grandglove.
Strategy Tip: Tifa is a stagger specialist. Her unique ability, "Unbridled Strength" (Triangle), enhances her next attack, allowing her to use "Omnistrike" or "Whirlwind Uppercut" twice in a row. Use this to quickly build stagger and then unleash True Strike for massive stagger percentage boosts.
Aerith Gainsborough
- Arcane Ward: Aerith creates a magical ward on the ground. Any spell cast within the ward is cast twice. Absolutely essential for maximizing magic damage. Unlocked with the Guard Stick (default).
- Soul Drain: Aerith drains a small amount of MP from an enemy. Useful for sustaining long battles. Unlocked with the Guard Stick (default).
- Flesh Render: Aerith conjures a magical blade that slashes enemies in front of her. Unlocked with the Mythril Rod.
- Lustrous Ray: Aerith fires a beam of light that damages a single enemy. Unlocked with the Silver Staff.
- Sorcerous Storm: Aerith conjures a storm of magical energy that damages enemies in an area around her. Unlocked with the Bladed Staff.
- Ray of Judgment: Aerith calls down a powerful beam of light from the heavens, dealing significant damage to a single target. Unlocked with the Reinforced Staff.
Strategy Tip: Aerith is your primary magic user and healer. Always aim to place an Arcane Ward before casting powerful spells like Firaga or Thundaga to double their effect. Keep her away from direct combat and use her ranged attacks and healing spells.
Limit Breaks
Limit Breaks are powerful, character-specific attacks that become available when a character takes enough damage or fills their Limit gauge through specific actions. They are often battle-changing and should be saved for opportune moments, such as against staggered bosses or large groups of enemies.
How to Use Limit Breaks
- Fill the Gauge: The Limit gauge fills as your character takes damage or performs certain actions (e.g., healing, staggering enemies).
- Activate: Once the gauge is full, a "Limit Break" command will appear in the Command Menu. Select it to unleash the attack.
Cloud's Limit Breaks
- Cross-slash: Cloud's initial Limit Break. Deals damage to a single target. Unlocked early in the game.
- Ascension: Cloud performs a powerful upward slash followed by a downward strike. Deals more damage than Cross-slash. Unlocked by completing the "Corneo's Secret Stash" side quest in Chapter 14.
- Climhazzard: Cloud's ultimate Limit Break. A series of powerful slashes that deal massive damage to a single target. Unlocked by completing all Battle Intel Reports for Chadley.
Barret's Limit Breaks
- Big Shot: Barret fires a massive projectile from his gun arm. Deals heavy damage to a single target. Unlocked early in the game.
- Charge: Barret charges forward, dealing damage to enemies in his path. Unlocked by completing the "Power of Music" side quest in Chapter 14.
- Catastrophe: Barret unleashes a devastating barrage of missiles. Deals immense damage to a wide area. Unlocked by completing all Battle Intel Reports for Chadley.
Tifa's Limit Breaks
- Somersault: Tifa performs a powerful somersault kick. Deals damage to a single target. Unlocked early in the game.
- Dolphin Blow: Tifa summons a dolphin to strike enemies. Deals more damage than Somersault. Unlocked by completing the "A Dynamite Body" side quest in Chapter 14.
- Final Heaven: Tifa's most powerful Limit Break. Delivers a series of rapid, devastating punches. Unlocked by completing all Battle Intel Reports for Chadley.
Aerith's Limit Breaks
- Healing Wind: Aerith casts a powerful healing spell on all allies. Restores a significant amount of HP. Unlocked early in the game.
- Planet's Protection: Aerith creates a barrier that grants invincibility to all allies for a short duration. Unlocked by completing the "Subterranean Menace" side quest in Chapter 14.
- Great Gospel: Aerith's ultimate Limit Break. Deals massive Holy damage to all enemies and fully restores HP and MP to all allies. Unlocked by completing all Battle Intel Reports for Chadley.
General Limit Break Strategy: For damage-focused Limit Breaks (Cloud, Barret, Tifa), always try to use them when an enemy is staggered to maximize damage output. Aerith's Limit Breaks are best used in dire situations for healing or to prevent a party wipe with Planet's Protection. Great Gospel is a game-changer, so save it for the toughest encounters.
