Combat System Explained
Final Fantasy VII Remake features a hybrid combat system that seamlessly blends real-time action with tactical, turn-based elements. The core of this system revolves around the ATB (Active Time Battle) gauge. As you perform basic attacks and maneuvers, your ATB gauge fills. Once a segment of the gauge is filled, you can enter Tactical Mode by holding the 'R1' button, which slows down time and allows you to select special abilities, spells, or items from a command menu. This strategic pause is crucial for planning your next moves and exploiting enemy weaknesses.
Each character has unique abilities that consume ATB. Cloud's Punisher Mode, for example, allows him to unleash a flurry of powerful attacks, while Tifa's Focused Strikes build stagger. Barret's abilities often involve charging his Gatling Gun for powerful shots, and Aerith can deploy Arcane Wards to amplify her spells. Mastering these individual abilities and knowing when to use them is key to efficient combat. Switching between characters on the fly (using the D-pad) is also essential, allowing you to adapt to different enemy types and battlefield situations.
Staggering enemies is a critical combat mechanic. As you deal damage, an enemy's stagger gauge fills. Once full, the enemy enters a staggered state, taking sificantly increased damage for a limited time. Exploiting this window with your most powerful attacks and spells is vital for quickly defeating tougher opponents. Certain abilities, like Tifa's True Strike and Cloud's Braver, are particularly effective at building stagger.
Blocking and dodging are your primary defensive tools. Blocking reduces incoming damage, while dodging allows you to evade attacks entirely. Mastering the timing of these actions is crucial, especially against bosses with devastating attacks. Some attacks can be parried, offering a brief window to counter-attack and build ATB. The Steadfast Block Materia enhances your defensive capabilities by reducing damage taken while guarding and increasing ATB generation.
Synergy abilities are powerful team-up attacks that consume ATB from multiple characters. These are unlocked through specific Materia and character progression. Using Synergy abilities at the right moment, especially when an enemy is staggered or vulnerable, can turn the tide of a difficult battle. The game also features Limit Breaks, ultimate abilities that charge up over time or through taking damage, unleashing devastating attacks unique to each character.
