Getting Started & Game Basics
Welcome to Midgar! Final Fantasy VII Remake introduces a dynamic combat system that blends real-time action with strategic command-based abilities. Your primary resource is the ATB (Active Time Battle) gauge, which fills over time and allows you to execute special attacks, spells, and item usage. Mastering the ATB system is key to survival, especially on higher difficulties. Enemies have various resistances and weaknesses, so assessing them with the Assess Materia is highly recommended. Learning enemy attack patterns and knowing when to dodge, block, or counter will sificantly improve your combat effectiveness.
The game features a party of up to three characters, each with unique skills and playstyles. Cloud Strife, the protagonist, is a balanced fighter with strong melee capabilities. Barret Wallace, a heavy-hitter, excels at ranged combat with his Gatling Gun. Tifa Lockhart is a swift martial artist who can rapidly build stagger for enemies. Aerith Gainsborough, a powerful mage, wields devastating elemental spells and healing abilities. Understanding how to switch between characters and utilize their strengths in conjunction is fundamental to overcoming the game's many challenges.
Materia is the core of your character customization. These magical orbs grant access to spells, abilities, and passive buffs. Equipping Materia to your weapons and armor allows you to tailor your party's strengths. Key Materia combinations include linking Elemental Materia to your weapon for added elemental damage or to your armor to resist specific elements. Magnify Materia, when linked with offensive spells, can turn a single-target attack into an area-of-effect blast, ideal for clearing out groups of enemies. MP Absorption Materia can be a lifesaver, replenishing your MP as you deal damage.
The early chapters, particularly Chapter 1, introduce you to the Scorpion Sentinel, a formidable boss. During its first phase, focus on dodging its leg stomps and guarding against its gun attacks. Barret's Steelskin ability can mitigate damage. In the second phase, the Sentinel erects a barrier; quickly close the distance and attack its rear field generator. Once the barrier is down, exploit its vulnerability with Thunder magic. Repeat this process, prioritizing breaking the barrier and then attacking, to defeat it. Remember that HP and MP refill between chapters, so don't be afraid to use your resources.
