Difficulty Settings

Final Fantasy VII Remake offers a range of difficulty settings to cater to every type of player, from those who want to experience the story without much challenge to those seeking a true test of their combat prowess. Understanding these settings and how they impact gameplay is crucial for optimizing your experience and achieving certain trophies.

Changing Difficulty

You can adjust the difficulty at almost any time from the main menu. Simply navigate to System > Options > Difficulty. The only exceptions are during active combat encounters or certain story-critical sequences. switching to a lower difficulty will not prevent you from earning most trophies, but playing on Hard mode is required for specific achievements and unlocks.

Available Difficulties

  • Easy: This setting is designed for players who want to focus primarily on the narrative and exploration. Enemies deal significantly less damage and have reduced HP, making combat encounters much more forgiving. You'll also find that your ATB gauge fills faster, allowing for more frequent use of abilities and spells. This is ideal for a first playthrough if you're new to action RPGs or simply wish to enjoy the story without stress.
  • Normal: The standard experience, recommended for most players. Enemies offer a balanced challenge, requiring strategic use of ATB abilities, Materia, and character switching. You'll need to pay attention to enemy weaknesses and manage your party's health and MP effectively. This difficulty provides a satisfying blend of story progression and engaging combat.
  • Hard: Unlocked after completing the game once on any difficulty. This is where the true challenge begins.
    • No Item Usage: A critical change in Hard mode is the inability to use items during combat or exploration. This means no Potions, Ethers, Phoenix Downs, or any other consumable. Healing and MP restoration must come entirely from abilities, spells, and rest points.
    • Increased Enemy HP & Damage: Enemies hit much harder and have substantially more health, turning even regular encounters into tactical battles.
    • Limited MP Restoration: MP will not regenerate at rest points or from Mako Shards. The only ways to restore MP are through specific Materia (e.g., MP Absorb, Chakra), character abilities (e.g., Prayer), or by breaking Shinra boxes which occasionally drop Mako Shards that provide a small amount of MP.
    • Strategic Materia & Equipment: Success on Hard mode hinges on meticulous Materia setups and optimized equipment. Consider pairing Magnify Materia with Cure Materia for area-of-effect healing, or Revival Materia to compensate for the lack of Phoenix Downs. HP Up Materia and MP Up Materia become invaluable.
    • Boss Strategies: Many boss fights require entirely new strategies on Hard. Exploiting elemental weaknesses and consistently pressuring enemies to Stagger them is paramount. For example, against the Airbuster in Chapter 7, focusing on destroying its components quickly becomes even more important to reduce its offensive capabilities.
    • Trophy Hunter's Paradise: Completing the game on Hard mode is required for the Hardened Veteran trophy, and it's essential for unlocking the most powerful accessories and Materia for subsequent challenges like the Pride and Joy Prototype combat simulator.
  • Classic: This mode is available from the start and can be selected at any time. It attempts to emulate the turn-based combat feel of the original Final Fantasy VII. While your characters will automatically attack and defend, you retain full control over their ATB abilities, spells, and Limit Breaks. You can also manually input commands at any time. This is a great option for players who prefer a more relaxed, tactical approach to combat without the constant need for real-time action inputs. The underlying difficulty (Easy, Normal, Hard) still applies to enemy stats and item restrictions, so you can play Classic on Easy, Normal, or even Hard.

Recommendations for Hard Mode

  • Max Out Materia: Before attempting Hard mode, ensure your key Materia (e.g., Cure, Revive, Elemental, HP Up, MP Up, Magic Up, Attack Up) are mastered. This significantly boosts their effectiveness.
  • Weapon Abilities: Master all weapon abilities for each character. These abilities are often powerful and can be used without consuming MP.
  • Assess Everything: Use Assess Materia on every enemy to learn their weaknesses and resistances. This information is critical for efficient combat.
  • Synergy: Plan your party composition and Materia setups to create powerful synergies. For instance, pairing ATB Boost Materia with a character who has strong offensive abilities can lead to rapid Staggering.
  • Chapter Select: After completing the game once, you unlock Chapter Select. This allows you to replay specific chapters on Hard mode to earn rewards, master Materia, or tackle specific challenges without replaying the entire game.
