Summons
Summons in Final Fantasy VII Remake are powerful allies that can turn the tide of battle. Unlike traditional magic, Summons are called upon by equipping specific Summon Materia. Once summoned, they fight alongside your party for a limited time, executing their own attacks and abilities. You can also command them to use unique special attacks, consuming ATB charges.
Summoning Mechanics
Summons aren't available in every battle. They typically appear during boss fights or extended encounters where the battle conditions are dire. A purple Summon gauge will appear on the right side of the screen when a Summon can be called. This gauge fills as you take damage, deal damage, and stagger enemies. Once full, you can use an ATB charge to call forth your equipped Summon.
- Summon Materia: Each Summon is tied to a specific Materia. Equip these to your characters to make them available in combat.
- Summon Gauge: This purple gauge dictates when a Summon can be called. Focus on dealing damage and staggering enemies to fill it quickly.
- ATB Commands: While a Summon is active, you can spend your character's ATB charges to command the Summon to use powerful abilities.
- Finishing Move: Before a Summon departs, they will unleash a devastating finishing move, often dealing massive damage to all enemies.
Summon Materia Locations and Strategies
Ifrit
Location: Automatically obtained during Chapter 3: Home Sweet Slum. Jessie gives it to Cloud after completing the "Nuisance in the Factory" side quest.
Strategy: Ifrit is a fire-elemental Summon, making him incredibly effective against enemies weak to fire. His attacks are generally single-target focused, but his ultimate attack, Hellfire, deals massive fire damage to all enemies. Consider equipping him when facing ice-based enemies or bosses like the Ice Golem.
Shiva
Location: Earned by defeating her in the Combat Simulator challenge "Vs. Shiva" in Chapter 8: Budding Bodyguard. This challenge becomes available after completing the main story objectives in the Sector 5 Slums.
Strategy: Shiva is an ice-elemental Summon, perfect for freezing and staggering enemies weak to ice. Her abilities often have a wide area of effect, making her great for crowd control. Her finishing move, Diamond Dust, is a powerful ice attack that can inflict the "Frozen" status on enemies. Pair her with characters who can exploit the "Frozen" status for bonus damage.
Fat Chocobo
Location: Obtained by defeating him in the Combat Simulator challenge "Vs. Fat Chocobo" in Chapter 9: The Town That Never Sleeps. This challenge becomes available after completing the main story objectives in Wall Market.
Strategy: Fat Chocobo is a non-elemental Summon that excels at applying pressure and staggering enemies with his heavy-hitting, often chaotic attacks. He's a great all-rounder for any fight where you need raw damage and stagger potential, regardless of elemental weaknesses. His ultimate attack, Chocobo Meteor, drops a massive meteor on enemies, dealing significant non-elemental damage.
Leviathan
Location: Acquired by defeating him in the Combat Simulator challenge "Vs. Leviathan" in Chapter 14: In Search of Hope. This challenge becomes available after completing the main story objectives in the Sector 6 Slums and unlocking the Corneo Colosseum's special challenges.
Strategy: Leviathan is a water-elemental Summon, making him invaluable against fire-based enemies. His attacks often have a wide reach and can inflict the "Wet" status, increasing magic damage taken. His finishing move, Tidal Wave, is a devastating water attack that can wipe out groups of weaker enemies or heavily damage bosses. He's particularly useful against enemies like the Hell House.
Bahamut
Location: Earned by defeating him in the Combat Simulator challenge "Vs. Bahamut" in Chapter 17: Deliverance from Chaos. This challenge is one of the toughest in the game and requires significant preparation.
Strategy: Bahamut is a non-elemental Summon that embodies raw destructive power. His attacks are incredibly strong, and he has a unique countdown ability, Megaflare, which culminates in an extremely powerful explosion. He's best reserved for the most challenging boss encounters where you need to deal maximum damage in a short window. Be prepared for a grueling fight to unlock him!
Chocobo & Moogle
Location: Found in a Materia orb in a ventilation shaft during Chapter 6: Light the Way. You'll need to activate a fan to access the shaft.
Strategy: This adorable duo is a non-elemental Summon that focuses on rapid, multi-hit attacks. They are excellent for quickly building the stagger gauge on enemies. Their finishing move, Stampede, deals a flurry of physical damage. They are a solid choice for early-game encounters and against enemies with low physical defense.
Carbuncle (DLC/Pre-order Bonus)
Location: Available via DLC or as a pre-order bonus. Check your game's add-ons.
Strategy: Carbuncle is a support-oriented Summon. While he doesn't deal massive damage, his abilities focus on buffing your party with effects like "Haste" and "Barrier," and even healing. He's incredibly useful in longer, more challenging fights where sustained survival is key. His finishing move, Ruby Light, provides significant healing and buffs to your entire party.
Cactuar (DLC/Pre-order Bonus)
Location: Available via DLC or as a pre-order bonus. Check your game's add-ons.
Strategy: Cactuar is a fast, evasive Summon whose attacks are often unpredictable but can deal surprising damage, especially with his signature 1,000 Needles ability. He's a fun, quirky Summon that can add a bit of chaos to your battles. While not as consistently powerful as some other Summons, his quick attacks can help maintain pressure.
Ramuh (DLC/Pre-order Bonus)
Location: Available via DLC or as a pre-order bonus. Check your game's add-ons.
Strategy: Ramuh is a lightning-elemental Summon, perfect for shocking enemies weak to electricity. His abilities often chain between multiple targets, making him excellent for clearing groups of enemies. His finishing move, Judgment Bolt, unleashes a powerful lightning strike. He's particularly effective against mechanical enemies and those found in Shinra facilities.
