New Game + & Post-Game Content

Final Fantasy VIII Remastered New Game + and post-game content await. Master the Junction system and tackle challenges beyond the main story.

New Game + & Post-Game Content

Congratulations, SeeD! You've navigated the tumultuous journey of Squall and his companions, saved the world (multiple times!), and perhaps even found love. But the adventure doesn't truly end with the final boss. Final Fantasy VIII Remastered offers a wealth of content for those seeking to push their limits, uncover every secret, and truly master the Junction system. While there isn't a traditional "New Game +" mode that carries over all your stats and items to a fresh story playthrough, the post-game content is extensive and provides ample opportunity for further exploration and challenge.

Post-Game Objectives & Challenges

Once you've defeated Ultimecia and watched the credits roll, you'll be prompted to save your game. This save file will place you back on the Ragnarok just before the final confrontation, allowing you to freely explore the world and tackle any unfinished business. Here's a breakdown of what awaits you:

The Ultimate Card Collector: Triple Triad Master

If you haven't already, the post-game is the perfect time to complete your Triple Triad card collection. This includes:

  • Rare Character Cards: Many of these are held by specific NPCs who only appear at certain points in the story or after specific events. Now is your chance to track them down.
    • Queen of Cards Quest: This intricate side quest involves spreading rare card rules and acquiring unique cards. Follow her movements across the world map (Balamb, Dollet, Galbadia, Esthar, Trabia) and challenge her repeatedly to obtain cards like the Kiros Card, Minotaur Card, and Phoenix Card. Remember to save frequently and reset if she doesn't create a new rare card or if you lose a valuable one.
    • CC Group: Located in Balamb Garden, the CC Group members (Jack, Club, Diamond, Spade, Heart, King, Joker, and Xu) hold many of the rarest GF and character cards. They only become fully accessible after completing certain story segments and winning enough games. Challenge them on the Ragnarok or in Balamb Garden.
  • GF Cards: Ensure you've acquired all GF cards, often won from their respective owners or by refining specific items.
  • Boss Cards: Many bosses drop their cards upon defeat, but some are missable. If you missed any, you'll need to rely on the Card Mod ability to create them from other cards or items, or challenge the CC Group members who may possess them.

Unlocking All Guardian Forces (GFs)

While most GFs are acquired through story progression, a few are optional and can be easily missed. The post-game is your last chance to obtain them:

  • Doomtrain: To acquire Doomtrain, you need the following items:
    1. 6x Malboro Tentacles: Dropped by Malboros (found in Esthar's Grandidi Forest or Island Closest to Heaven/Hell).
    2. 6x Steel Pipes: Dropped by Wendigos (found in forests near Dollet) or refined from Elastoid cards.
    3. 6x Remedy+: Refine 100 Remedies into 1 Remedy+ using Alexander's Med LV Up ability, or 10 Remedies into 1 Remedy+ using Doc's ability.
    4. Solomon Ring: Found in Tears' Point, Esthar. Examine the statue in the center of the area.
Once you have all items, use the Solomon Ring from your inventory to summon Doomtrain.
  • Cactuar: Head to Cactuar Island (east of Centra Continent). Interact with the giant Cactuar on the island's northern tip. You'll then fight the Jumbo Cactuar. Defeat it to earn the Cactuar GF.
  • Bahamut: Travel to the Deep Sea Research Center (southwest of the world map, accessible by Ragnarok). Solve the puzzle by answering the computer's questions correctly (answers vary, but generally involve not fighting, not being a SeeD, and not being a human). Defeat Bahamut in battle to obtain its GF.

The Ultimate Challenge: Omega Weapon

The true final boss of Final Fantasy VIII Remastered, Omega Weapon, resides deep within the Ultimecia Castle. This is a formidable foe, far surpassing Ultimecia in difficulty. Prepare extensively before engaging:

  • Location: Ultimecia Castle, accessible via the portal in the final area before Ultimecia's chamber. You'll need to activate the switch near the save point to open the path.
  • Preparation:
    • Leveling: While not strictly necessary due to the Junction system, having characters around Level 100 will provide a good stat base.
    • Junctions: Max out your Strength, Magic, Vitality, Spirit, and Speed with powerful spells like Triple, Ultima, Meteor, Full-Life, and Meltdown.
    • Abilities: Ensure your GFs have abilities like Auto-Haste, Auto-Protect, Auto-Shell, and Ribbon. Equip characters with Revive, Recover, and Defend.
    • Items: Stock up on Megalixirs, Hero Drinks, Holy Wars, and Phoenix Downs.
    • Party: A common strategy involves Squall, Zell, and Rinoa. Squall's Lion Heart Limit Break is crucial, Zell's Duel can deal massive damage, and Rinoa's Angel Wing can cast powerful magic without consuming stock.
  • Strategy:
    • Opening: Omega Weapon will likely open with a powerful attack like Lv5 Death or Megiddo Flame. Have Auto-Protect/Shell and Ribbon active.
    • Damage Output: Focus on maximizing your damage per turn. Squall's Lion Heart is your best friend. Use Hero Drinks on your main attackers.
    • Survival: Keep your party alive with Megalixirs and Full-Life. Use Defend to mitigate damage from its most powerful attacks like Terra Break.
    • Zell's Duel: If you've mastered Zell's Duel Limit Break, this can be a game-changer. Practice the input sequence for maximum hits.
  • Reward: Defeating Omega Weapon earns you the Proof of Omega, a key item that signifies your ultimate mastery.

Deep Sea Research Center Exploration

Beyond Bahamut, the Deep Sea Research Center holds another secret: the Ultima Weapon. This area is also home to high-level enemies and valuable draw points.

  • Ultima Weapon: After defeating Bahamut, proceed deeper into the facility. You'll encounter a fixed battle with Ultima Weapon. This boss is also challenging but generally less so than Omega Weapon. It guards a valuable Ultima draw point.
  • Draw Points: The Deep Sea Research Center has several hidden draw points containing rare spells like Ultima and Triple. Explore every screen thoroughly.
  • High-Level Encounters: The enemies here are strong and can provide excellent AP for mastering GF abilities.

Chocobo World (PocketStation Mini-Game)

While originally a PocketStation exclusive, Final Fantasy VIII Remastered integrates Chocobo World directly into the game menu. This mini-game allows you to send your Chocobo, Boko, on adventures to find items and gain levels.

  • Access: Select "Chocobo World" from the main menu.
  • Benefits: Boko can find rare items (Potions, Phoenix Downs, Elixirs, and even some rare cards) that can be transferred to your main game. A high-level Boko can also assist you in battle with its "Choco-Boco" attack.
  • Strategy: Periodically check on Boko, send him on new adventures, and ensure he has enough food. The longer you leave him, the more items he might find.

Completing the Trophy List

For completionists, the post-game is the time to mop up any remaining trophies. This includes:

  • Acquiring all GFs.
  • Learning all GF abilities.
  • Collecting all Triple Triad cards.
  • Defeating Omega Weapon.
  • Achieving specific milestones (e.g., winning a certain number of battles, drawing a specific number of spells).

Embrace the challenge, refine your Junctions, and prove yourself the ultimate SeeD in the world of Final Fantasy VIII Remastered!
