Character & Guardian Force Guides

In Final Fantasy VIII Remastered, your party's strength lies not only in their individual abilities but also in the powerful Guardian Forces (GFs) they command. Each character has unique strengths, and understanding how to best utilize them alongside their GFs is key to mastering the game's combat system.

The Junction system allows you to equip magic spells to your characters' abilities, sificantly boosting their stats. This applies to both character stats and GF abilities. GFs themselves level up and learn new abilities, which can then be taught to characters. This creates a deep layer of customization, allowing you to tailor your party to your preferred playstyle.

Character Overviews:

  • Squall Leonhart: The main protagonist, Squall is a balanced fighter with strong physical attack capabilities. His Limit Breaks are powerful and evolve with his weapon. He's a reliable damage dealer and a solid all-around character.
  • Rinoa Heartilly: Rinoa's combat style is unique, often relying on her dog Angelo for special attacks. She excels in support and can inflict various status effects. Her Limit Breaks are less direct but can be highly effective.
  • Zell Dincht: A close-quarters combatant, Zell is known for his rapid-fire punches and kicks. His Limit Breaks are a series of powerful martial arts combos. He's excellent for dealing quick, high damage in melee.
  • Selphie Tilmitt: Selphie is a more unpredictable character whose Limit Breaks can range from powerful offensive spells to game-ending attacks. Her 'Slots' command offers a high-risk, high-reward playstyle.
  • Irvine Kinneas: Irvine is a sharpshooter who uses a gunblade. His Limit Breaks involve powerful ranged attacks. He's ideal for players who prefer to attack from a distance.
  • Quistis Trepe: Quistis is a versatile character who uses a whip. She can learn enemy-specific 'Blue Magic' attacks, making her adaptable to various combat situations.

Guardian Force (GF) Integration:

Each GF provides a set of abilities that can be learned by characters. These range from stat-boosting abilities (like HP +20%, Strength +40%) to combat commands (like Draw, Magic, Item) and even unique skills like 'Lifeblood' or 'Auto-Haste'.

When a GF is Junctioned to a character, it not only grants access to its learned abilities but also contributes to that character's stats when the GF gains experience. It's crucial to strategically ass GFs to characters based on their roles. For example, assing GFs with strong offensive abilities to Squall or Zell, and GFs with support or healing abilities to Rinoa or Selphie.

Some GFs are obtained through story progression, while others can be acquired through specific side quests or by defeating certain bosses. Prioritizing which GFs to learn abilities from first can sificantly impact your party's overall effectiveness. For instance, learning 'Junction Magic' early on is vital for maximizing the Junction system's potential.
