Leveling Up & Experience Points
Understanding how experience points (EXP) work in Final Fantasy VIII is crucial, as it directly impacts enemy scaling and overall game difficulty. Unlike many RPGs, simply leveling up your characters isn't always the best strategy for success.
In Final Fantasy VIII, characters gain EXP when they participate in battles and defeat enemies. This EXP contributes to their character level. However, the game features a unique system where enemy stats (HP, attack, defense, etc.) scale based on the average level of your party. This means that as your characters level up, the enemies in the wild will also become stronger. For players who are diligently drawing magic and junctioning it to their stats, this scaling can be managed, as their boosted stats will outpace enemy growth. However, for players who are not focusing on Junctioning, a high character level can lead to sificantly more challenging encounters. This has led to the popularization of 'low-level runs' in Final Fantasy VIII. A low-level run involves intentionally minimizing or avoiding EXP gain to keep character levels as low as possible, while still strengthening the party through Junctioning and GF abilities. This approach makes the game considerably more difficult, as you rely heavily on strategic Junctioning and powerful GF summons rather than raw character stats. To avoid gaining EXP, You can ensure that only characters who have a GF junctioned participate in battles, as characters without a GF do not gain EXP. Alternatively, abilities like 'Level Down' can be used to reduce a character's level. The 'Enc-None' ability, learned from certain GFs, can also be used to bypass random encounters entirely, allowing players to focus on story progression and strategic battles without accumulating unwanted EXP. Ultimately, while leveling up is a core RPG mechanic, in Final Fantasy VIII, it's a double-edged sword that requires careful consideration based on your chosen playstyle and strategy.
