Final Fantasy VIII Remastered features an epic storyline with a cast of characters including Laguna Loire, Squall Leonhart, Ultimecia, and Seifer Almasy. The game's character progression is heavily influenced by the Junction system, which allows for extensive customization. Instead of traditional weapon and armor systems, characters junction Guardian Forces (GFs) and spells to their statistics, such as Strength, Vitality, and Luck, to gain various bonuses.

Spells are acquired by drawing them from enemies or Draw Points, or by refining items and cards. These spells are then stocked as inventory and can be equipped to character stats. GFs also learn abilities through Ability Points (AP) gained in battle, which can be applied to characters to enhance combat efficiency, refine magic, gain stat bonuses on level-up, access remote shops, and unlock additional battle commands. This flexible system allows players to tailor character builds to their strategic preferences.
