Drawing Magic from Enemies
In Final Fantasy VIII Remastered, magic is acquired by drawing spells from enemies and draw-points, a notable change from previous titles. This method allows you to stock up on spells like Cure/Cura/Curaga from Turtapods or even powerful magic like Triple and Ultima from specific draw points. Strategic drawing is crucial for building your spell inventory.
To effectively draw magic, consider these preparations:
- Confuse Stocks: Have a good supply of Confuse spells.
- Level Control: Use LV Up to increase enemy levels for better draws (e.g., Turtapods to Level 30+ for defensive mode), or LV Down to reduce enemy levels and minimize XP gain.
- Low Strength Character: Unjunction magic from Strength and remove Str+60% from one character to lower their Strength. This allows you to gently attack enemies without defeating them too quickly, enabling more draws.
Specific Drawing Strategies:
- Turtapods: If a Level 30+ Turtapod enters defensive mode after being attacked, cast Confusion on it. While confused and in defensive mode, it can be used for passive grinding via Angelo Search. You can draw Cure/Cura/Curaga from them to heal them and prolong the encounter.
- Ultima Weapon: Begin the fight by drawing Eden from Ultima Weapon. This is a primary reason for descending into the Deep Sea Research Center.
- Tri-Face: Encountering Tri-Face enemies (accessible after Zell opens the excavation site door) is the only viable way to obtain Luck-J Scrolls, which refine into Luck Ups. This is essential for hardcore min-maxers. Tri-Face encounters also provide Rosetta Stones, Ultima, and Hero-Trial items.
- Draw Points: Look for a Triple draw point on the Ruby Dragon floor during your descent, and a hidden Ultima draw point near the end of the Iron Giant floor.
Encounters in certain areas, like those with Tri-Face, cannot be avoided with Enc-None, nor can you flee from them. However, using LV Down can reduce enemy levels to ensure minimal XP gain (1-2 XP per kill).
