Attacking & Defending
In Final Fantasy VIII, attacking and defending involve unique mechanics that set it apart from previous titles. A significant change is how magic is acquired; instead of learning spells through experience, players must "draw" magic from enemies and "draw-points."
The gameplay in Final Fantasy VIII introduces distinct combat mechanics. Magic acquisition is primarily done by "drawing" spells directly from enemies or designated "draw-points" scattered throughout the world. This system requires strategic management of your magic stock. Guardian Forces (GFs), the game's summon monsters, are also integral to combat. GFs gain experience points and learn abilities, requiring careful planning as only a limited number of abilities can be learned. All enemies can be attacked with beautifully animated Guardian Forces, adding a visual spectacle to combat.
An example of a unique defensive and passive grinding strategy involves the Turtapod. When a Turtapod is afflicted with Confusion while in its defensive mode, it will spin indefinitely. This state allows for passive grinding via Angelo Search, where Angelo will periodically dig for goodies, providing items at a slow but hands-off rate.
