Targeting & Enemy Selection

Effective targeting and enemy selection are fundamental to success in Final Fantasy VIII's combat system. While the game often defaults to targeting the active enemy, understanding how to manually select targets and prioritize threats can dramatically improve your efficiency and survivability.

Default Targeting

By default, when you select an attack command, your character will target the enemy that is currently active or the one that was last targeted. This is often sufficient for straightforward encounters. However, in battles with multiple enemies or specific threat priorities, relying solely on the default can be detrimental.

Manual Target Selection

You can manually select which enemy to target. When you choose an attack or magic command, the game will usually present a list of available enemies. You can cycle through these enemies using the directional buttons or by directly selecting them with the cursor. This allows you to:

  • Focus Fire: Concentrate your party's attacks on a single enemy to defeat it quickly, reducing the number of threats you face.
  • Prioritize Threats: Target enemies that pose the greatest danger, such as those with powerful area-of-effect attacks or debilitating status effects.
  • Exploit Weaknesses: If you know an enemy has a specific elemental or physical weakness, you can target it accordingly.

Enemy Prioritization Strategies

Deciding which enemy to target first depends on the situation:

  • Eliminate Support First: If an enemy is buffing allies or healing them, it's often wise to take it out quickly before its support becomes too sificant.
  • Deal with High Damage Threats: Enemies that deal massive damage or have dangerous special attacks should be a priority.
  • Target Weak Enemies: Sometimes, quickly dispatching weaker enemies can reduce the overall incoming damage to your party.
  • Status Inflictors: Enemies that inflict status ailments like Sleep, Confusion, or Poison should be dealt with promptly to prevent your party from being incapacitated.

Using the Scan Command

The Scan ability, learned from GFs like Siren, is invaluable for understanding your enemies. It reveals an enemy's HP, current status, and sometimes their elemental affinities. This information is crucial for making informed decisions about target selection and the best spells or abilities to use.

Targeting Specific Party Members

While you can't directly target enemies with healing or buffing spells in the same way as attacks, you can select which party member receives the effect of your support magic or items. This is crucial for focused healing or applying buffs to specific characters who need them most.
