Combat System Deep Dive
Final Fantasy VIII Remastered offers an epic storyline and a massive new world to explore, providing dozens of hours of gameplay. The game features improved graphics with lifelike characters and motion-captured animation, enhancing the visual experience. All enemies can be attacked with beautifully animated Guardian Forces, adding a strategic and visually impressive element to combat.
The combat system in Final Fantasy VIII Remastered introduces several key differences from previous titles. A notable change is how magic is acquired; instead of gaining experience and learning spells, you must "draw" magic and spells directly from enemies and designated "draw-points." This mechanic requires careful management and strategic use of your turns in battle.
Guardian Forces (GFs) return as summon monsters, but with expanded mechanics. GFs gain experience points and can learn various abilities, allowing for customization and strategic assignment to characters. This system acts as a substitute for traditional armor and accessories, which were used in earlier games to modify character statistics. Each major character also possesses a unique weapon that can be upgraded, influencing its appearance, power, and associated Limit Break.
A unique passive grinding method involves Angelo Search. When a Turtapod enemy is afflicted with Confusion while in its defensive mode, it will spin indefinitely. During this state, Angelo will periodically dig for items, providing a hands-off way to acquire various consumables. The items Angelo can find include:
