GF Abilities & Learning
Guardian Forces (GFs) are the cornerstone of character development in Final Fantasy VIII, serving as both powerful allies in combat and the primary means of learning new abilities. By earning Ability Points (AP) in battles, GFs level up, unlocking a diverse range of skills that can be junctioned to characters to sificantly boost their stats, grant new combat commands, or provide passive benefits.
The learning process for GF abilities is strategic. Each GF has a finite number of abilities it can learn, and you must choose which ones to prioritize. This means that not all GFs will be able to learn every available ability. Therefore, it's crucial to identify the most beneficial abilities and ass them to the GFs that will best utilize them. Some abilities are exclusive to certain GFs, while others can be learned by multiple GFs.
GF abilities are broadly categorized into several types:
- Stat Boosts: These are passive abilities that, when junctioned to a character, directly increase their stats. Examples include HP+20%, Str+20%, Vit+20%, Mag+20%, Spr+20%, Spd+20%, Luck+20%, and Hit-Arts. These are fundamental for character progression and tailoring stats to specific needs.
- Combat Commands: These abilities grant new options in the battle menu. Standard commands like Draw, Magic, and Item are learned early. More advanced combat abilities might include specific attack patterns or status-inflicting skills.
- Refine Commands: These are arguably the most critical abilities. They allow you to convert items into magic spells, other items, or even new equipment. Key examples include Card-Mod (convert cards to items), Tool-RF (convert monster parts to weapons), GFAbl Med-RF (convert items to magic/accessories), and Supt Mag-RF (convert items to support magic).
- Support Abilities: These are passive abilities that are always active when the GF is junctioned to a character. They provide ongoing benefits such as HP Bonus, Auto-Haste, Auto-Protect, Auto-Shell, and Alert.
When deciding which abilities to learn, consider the role of each GF and the overall needs of your party. It's generally advisable to have at least one GF learn all the essential Refine commands early on, as these unlock the most powerful customization options. For combat-focused characters, prioritize stat-boosting abilities. For support characters, focus on abilities that enhance their healing or utility. Don't overlook the Support abilities, as they can provide sificant advantages throughout the game.
The learning process requires AP, which is earned by participating in battles. GFs gain AP at a slower rate than characters gain experience points. Certain items, like the 'Fallen' item, can be used to grant AP to a GF. Additionally, some enemies drop items that can be refined into AP-boosting items.
