GF Acquisition & Summoning
Guardian Forces (GFs) are indispensable allies in Final Fantasy VIII Remastered, providing both passive stat boosts through Junctioning and powerful offensive capabilities when summoned. Acquiring all available GFs and understanding their summoning mechanics is vital for maximizing your party's combat effectiveness and progression throughout the game.
GFs are obtained through various means, primarily by defeating them in battle during story progression or by finding them in specific locations. Some GFs require specific items or completing certain side quests to acquire. Each GF offers a unique set of abilities that can be learned and junctioned to characters, sificantly enhancing their stats and combat utility.
Methods of GF Acquisition:
- Story Progression: Many GFs, such as Quetzalcoatl, Shiva, and Ifrit, are acquired naturally as you advance through the main storyline.
- Boss Battles: Some GFs are encountered as bosses and can be 'drawn' from them during the fight. Examples include Siren and Carbuncle.
- Draw Points: Certain GFs can be found at specific Draw Points, often in challenging dungeons or hidden areas.
- Item Collection: GFs like Doomtrain are acquired by collecting specific rare items and using a GF ability to refine them.
- Side Quests: Completing certain side quests or mini-games can lead to acquiring GFs, such as Leviathan through the Chocobo World mini-game.
Summoning Mechanics:
Summoning a GF consumes the ATB gauge of the character who initiates the summon. This means that character cannot perform any other action until their gauge refills. Therefore, summoning should be a strategic decision, reserved for moments when the GF's impact will be most sificant.
- Combat Impact: GFs unleash powerful attacks that can deal massive damage, exploit elemental weaknesses, or inflict status effects. They are particularly effective against bosses.
- AP Gain: While GFs gain AP passively when junctioned, summoning them in battle also contributes to their AP gain, accelerating the learning of new abilities.
- Strategic Timing: Consider the flow of battle. Summoning a GF when the enemy is vulnerable or when your party is in danger can be a game-changer.
- Resource Management: While GFs don't consume MP, the character who summons them loses their turn. Weigh this against the potential benefit of the summon.
Key GFs and their Acquisition Highlights:
- Quetzalcoatl: Early game, Balamb Garden.
- Shiva: Dollet mission.
- Ifrit: Tomb of the Unknown King.
- Siren: Opera House boss.
- Diablos: Requires 'Dark Matter' item or Centra Ruins. Essential for 'Enc-None'.
- Doomtrain: Requires specific rare items.
- Bahamut: Lunar Gate.
- Eden: Final boss draw.
Prioritizing the acquisition of GFs that offer essential abilities like 'Draw', 'HP-J', 'Str-J', and 'Mag-J' early on will greatly benefit your progression. As you acquire more GFs, diversify your party's learned abilities to cover a wider range of combat and utility needs.
