GF Compatibility & Affinity
In Final Fantasy VIII, Guardian Forces (GFs) are not just powerful summons; they are integral to your party's growth through the Junction system. While GFs don't have direct 'compatibility' in the traditional sense like in some other RPGs, their effectiveness is tied to the abilities they learn and the stats they can junction. Each GF possesses a unique set of abilities that can be learned by spending Ability Points (AP) earned in battle. These learned abilities are crucial for unlocking the full potential of your characters and GFs.
The 'Compatibility' aspect of GFs primarily relates to their summoning speed and the effectiveness of their attacks in battle. Some GFs, like Shiva and Quetzalcoatl, are acquired early and have faster summoning animations, making them useful for quick bursts of damage. Others, like Bahamut and Eden, are acquired later and possess incredibly powerful, albeit slower, summoning animations. The 'affinity' between a GF and a character is established through junctioning. When a GF is junctioned to a character, that character gains access to the GF's learned abilities and can use the Junction command. The more AP a GF accumulates, the more abilities it learns, and the more options become available for junctioning to character stats.
Certain GFs are essential for unlocking specific Junction abilities. For example, Diablos is crucial for learning the 'Move-HP Up' and 'HP Bonus' abilities, which are vital for increasing a character's survivability. Siren is key for learning 'Magic-J' and 'Status-Attack-J', enabling the junctioning of magic to stats and the application of status effects in combat. Understanding which GF provides which abilities and prioritizing their learning is a core part of optimizing your party. The 'GF Allocation' menu allows you to ass GFs to specific characters, ensuring that the right abilities are available to the right party members. This strategic assment is key to building a well-rounded and powerful team.
