GF Abilities & Refine Commands
Guardian Forces (GFs) are not just powerful summonable allies in Final Fantasy VIII; they are also the key to unlocking a vast array of abilities that can dramatically enhance your party's capabilities. By earning Ability Points (AP) in battle, GFs level up and learn new skills, ranging from stat boosts and combat commands to invaluable refinement abilities that transform items into magic or other useful resources.
The strategic allocation of GF abilities is paramount to success in Final Fantasy VIII. Each GF has a unique set of abilities it can learn, and you can only teach a limited number of abilities to each GF. This necessitates careful planning to ensure your party has access to the most beneficial skills. Prioritizing abilities that boost stats, provide essential combat commands, or unlock powerful refinement options is crucial.
Key GF abilities can be broadly categorized:
- Stat Boosts: Abilities like HP+20%, HP+40%, HP+80%, Str+20%, Vit+20%, etc., directly increase a character's stats when junctioned. These are fundamental for character progression.
- Combat Commands: Abilities like Draw, Magic, Item, and Attack are standard commands. More advanced ones include abilities that allow GFs to use specific spells or inflict status effects.
- Refine Commands: These are arguably the most important. Abilities like 'Draw-J', 'Card-Mod', 'Tool-RF', 'GFAbl Med-RF', and 'Supt Mag-RF' allow you to convert items into magic spells, other items, or even new equipment.
- Support Abilities: These include passive abilities that are always active when the GF is junctioned, such as 'HP Bonus', 'Auto-Haste', 'Auto-Protect', and 'Auto-Shell'.
The 'Refine' commands are particularly game-changing. For example:
- Card-Mod: Allows you to convert collectible cards into items. This is essential for obtaining many powerful spells and materials.
- Tool-RF: Refines monster parts and other items into weapons or useful tools.
- GFAbl Med-RF: A versatile ability that can refine various items into magic spells or accessories. For instance, it can turn 'Giant's Ring' into 'Gaea's Ring'.
- Supt Mag-RF: Refines items into support magic spells, crucial for defensive buffs.
When choosing which abilities to learn, consider the overall needs of your party. Ensure at least one GF learns the essential Refine commands early on. Prioritize stat-boosting abilities for your main damage dealers and defensive abilities for your tanks. Don't neglect the Support abilities, as they can provide sificant passive benefits throughout the game.
