GF Ability Learning & Customization
Guardian Forces (GFs) are the backbone of your party's power in Final Fantasy VIII Remastered, offering not only devastating attacks but also a vast array of abilities that can be learned and customized. Mastering the GF ability learning system is crucial for optimizing your characters' stats, unlocking new combat commands, and gaining passive advantages that can turn the tide of any battle.
Each GF gains Ability Points (AP) from battles, which are then used to learn new abilities. The amount of AP gained depends on the number of GFs equipped to a character and the enemies fought. Some enemies and locations yield more AP than others, making them ideal for grinding.
The abilities available to learn are divided into several categories:
- Stat-Boosting Abilities: These are paramount for character development. Abilities like HP Bonus, Strength +40%, Magic +40%, Vitality +40%, and Speed +40% directly increase your characters' core stats when Junctioned. Prioritize learning these early on.
- Combat Abilities: These grant new commands in battle, such as Draw, Magic, Item, and GF. Some GFs also learn abilities that enhance these commands, like Draw-Attack or Magic-Attack.
- Support Abilities: These provide passive benefits that are active throughout the battle. Examples include Auto-Haste, Auto-Protect, Auto-Shell, and Return Damage. These are invaluable for survivability and efficiency.
- GF-Specific Abilities: Some abilities are unique to certain GFs or enhance their own performance, such as GF HP +20% or GF Level Up.
When customizing your GFs, consider the role you want each character to play. For a physical attacker, focus on learning Strength and HP boosting abilities. For a magic user, prioritize Magic and Magic Defense boosts. Support characters might benefit from abilities that increase their speed or grant status resistances.
It's also important to note that GFs have a limited number of ability slots. Therefore, strategic choices must be made. You can't learn every ability for every GF. Focus on the abilities that best complement your party's overall strategy and the challenges you anticipate facing.
Some players choose to specialize their GFs, dedicating one GF to learning all the stat-boosting abilities, another to combat commands, and so on. This allows for a more focused approach to character development. Experiment with different combinations to find what works best for your playstyle.
