GF Boosts & Special Commands
Guardian Forces (GFs) in Final Fantasy VIII are more than just summonable allies; they are integral to character development through their learned abilities. These abilities range from passive stat boosts to crucial combat commands, sificantly enhancing your party's capabilities. Understanding and strategically learning these GF abilities is key to mastering the game.
GFs learn abilities by accumulating Ability Points (AP) from battles. Once an ability is learned, it can be equipped by the character to whom the GF is junctioned. These abilities are broadly categorized into Magic, Stat, Command, and Auto abilities.
Key GF Abilities to Prioritize:
- Stat-Boosting Abilities: Abilities like HP Bonus, Strength Bonus, Magic Bonus, Vitality Bonus, Magic Defense Bonus, Speed Bonus, and Luck Bonus are paramount. These abilities permanently increase a character's stats each time they level up, allowing for sificant stat growth over time. Prioritize learning these on GFs that will be junctioned to your main damage dealers.
- Auto Abilities: These provide passive benefits without requiring command selection. Auto-Haste, Auto-Protect, and Auto-Shell are incredibly valuable, offering constant buffs that increase speed and defense. Auto-Regen provides gradual HP recovery. These are essential for survivability, especially in tougher battles.
- Command Abilities: These are active abilities that can be used from the menu. Draw allows you to acquire magic from enemies and draw points. Item allows you to use items. Magic allows you to cast junctioned spells. GF allows you to summon your GFs. Learning these ensures you have access to all core combat options.
- Special Command Abilities: Some GFs teach unique command abilities. For example, Scan (from Ifrit) allows you to view enemy HP and weaknesses. Life and Life2 (from Siren) allow for party revival. Darkness (from Diabolos) can inflict darkness on enemies.
- Support Abilities: Abilities like HP Drain and Magic Drain allow GFs to recover HP or MP by attacking enemies. En-Spell and Body allow you to junction elemental or status attack magic to your weapon, respectively.
Strategic Learning:
It's not always about learning every ability on every GF. Instead, focus on learning the most impactful abilities on GFs that are likely to be junctioned to your core party members. For instance, if Squall is your primary damage dealer, ensure the GF junctioned to him has learned HP Bonus, Strength Bonus, and Auto-Haste. For support characters, focus on abilities that enhance their utility, such as Item or Magic, and defensive Auto abilities.
Advanced Tip: Some GFs have unique abilities that can be game-changing. For example, GF Eden's Devour ability allows it to consume enemies for stat boosts, and GF Diabolos's Time Compression can inflict Slow. Learning these specialized abilities can provide unique advantages in specific situations.
