Understanding the Junction System — Final Fantasy VIII Remastered Guide
The Junction System in Final Fantasy VIII Remastered allows you to customize character stats by linking magic to them. Guardian Forces (GFs) are crucial for this, as they learn abilities that enhance your junctioning options. Proper use of the Junction System is key to optimizing your party's performance and overcoming challenging encounters.
The Junction System is a core mechanic in Final Fantasy VIII Remastered, allowing you to customize character stats and abilities. Here's what you need to know:
- Guardian Forces (GFs): These summon monsters gain experience points and learn abilities, which are essential for the Junction System.
- Magic: Instead of learning spells traditionally, you "draw" magic from enemies and draw-points. This magic is then junctioned to character stats to boost them.
- Stat Customization: By junctioning magic to stats like Strength, Vitality, or Luck, you can significantly alter a character's effectiveness in battle.
- Optimizing Angelo Search: To optimize Angelo Search, disable an enemy and leave the game running. Avoid learning Angelo Recover or Angelo Reverse, as they might interfere. If you acquire the Giglamesh GF (after Odin GF and on Disc 4), it will randomly interrupt Angelo Search, making it less viable. If you don't get Odin before Disc 4, Giglamesh won't appear.
- Deep Sea Research Center Strategy: When descending through the Deep Sea Research Center, you have 20 units of "Reserve Steam Pressure" (RSP). You need 10 RSP to reach your ultimate goal at the excavation site. The door to the excavation site consumes 4 RSP. If you have 10-13 RSP and Zell in your party, you can choose to let him tinker with the machine, which will only consume 4 RSP. However, this will rouse monsters in the excavation site, and you will have to fight through them (Enc-None will not bypass these fixed encounters). These fixed encounters can include rare monsters like Tri-Face, which drop Curse Spikes.
- Item Refinement and Stat Boosting:
- Adamantine: Teaches Vit+60%. Refine Vit-J Scrolls into Orihalcon, then Orihalcon into Adamantine via Eden's GFAbl Med-RF. 20x Adamantine can be refined into a Steel Curtain, teaching Auto-Protect.
- Aegis Amulet: Teaches Eva-J. Cactuar and Eden can learn it natively. One can be acquired via a side quest.
- Hungry Cookpot: Teaches Devour, useful for stat-boosting.
- Moon Curtain: Teaches Auto-Shell. Acquire two if possible, or refine 10x Force Armlets into a Magic Armlet, then 20x Magic Armlets into a Moon Curtain. The Alexander Card can also be refined into three Moon Curtains.
- Status Guard: Teaches ST-Def-Jx4. Cerberus and Doomtrain GFs learn it natively. Another can be acquired via the Shumi Village sidequest.
- Curse Spikes and Dark Matter: You need 100x Curse Spikes to get Dark Matter, a prerequisite for many refinements. Obtaining 200x Luck Up items to max out a level 100 character's Luck (with Death junctioned to Luck-J) would require approximately 2,600 Tri-Faces.
- Eden GF: Eden is the only GF that can break the damage limit with a single attack. Its lengthy animation allows for boosting. While a low-level party might not maximize its potential, it's a strong damage source.
