Guardian Force (GF) Lore & Integration
Guardian Forces, or GFs, are a cornerstone of combat and character development in Final Fantasy VIII Remastered. These powerful entities are summoned to aid the party in battle, unleashing devastating attacks and providing passive stat boosts. Lore-wise, GFs are ancient beings, often tied to the very fabric of the world and its history. Their origins are shrouded in mystery, but it's understood that they are drawn to individuals with strong magical potential, particularly those who can draw upon the planet's energy. The ability to Junction GFs to characters is a unique mechanic, allowing players to customize their party's strengths and weaknesses by equipping GFs to specific character slots. Each GF possesses a unique set of abilities, both for combat and for Junctioning. For instance, Ifrit, an early-game GF, offers abilities like Fire and HP +20% when Junctioned. Later GFs, such as Bahamut, boast sificantly more powerful offensive spells and passive bonuses. The integration of GFs into the narrative is also crucial; they are not merely tools but are often linked to the overarching plot, with certain GFs playing a role in the machinations of antagonists or the history of the world. Understanding the lore behind each GF, such as the rumored origins of Doomtrain or the nature of Eden, can deepen the player's appreciation for the game's intricate world-building. Mastering the Junction system, which involves drawing magic from enemies and assing it to GF abilities, is paramount to success. For example, Junctioning 100 copies of the spell Blizzard to a character's Attack stat can dramatically increase their physical damage output. The strategic allocation of GFs and their learned abilities is key to overcoming the game's most challenging encounters, including bosses like Adel and the various Sorceress encounters.
