The world of Spira once enjoyed a golden age, powered by advanced machinery known as machina. However, this era ended abruptly with the appearance of "Sin" a millennium ago, a colossal menace that repeatedly brings destruction. The teachings of Yevon attribute Sin's existence to humanity's over-reliance on machina, guiding the people of Spira in their struggle against this unending cycle.

Tidus, a Blitzball star, is mysteriously transported to Spira after his home city of Zanarkand is destroyed by Sin, a thousand years in the past. He finds himself in a world where summoners repeatedly defeat Sin, only for it to inevitably return.

In Final Fantasy X-2, the story continues with various events across Spira:

  • Besaid Island: Completing the episode here rewards you with the War Buddy Sphere from Beclem and Twilight Rain on the main walkway. A chest in Besaid Village contains Black Lore, and beating the Cloister Gauntlet yields two Mega Phoenixes.
  • Kilika Island: Episode completion grants the Tricks of the Trade GG. The Invincible can be obtained at the new Youth League HQ if conditions are met. Find Arcane Lore up the hidden path in the woods and a Megalixir in the left temple room.
  • Mi'ihen Highroad: Episode completion offers different rewards based on the culprit. If Rikku is the culprit, you get Ragnarok. If Rin is the culprit, you get Gippal's Sphere. Stone Breath BB can be learned from Epitaph. Beating King VERMIN rewards the Font of Power GG. Victor Primoris is found with a Chocobo. Examining a random machina can yield Everyman's Repair Manual. The secret dungeon contains various items including Mega Phoenix (x2), Black Tome, White Tome, Elixir (x3), Nature's Lore, Sword Tome, Arcane Tome, and Bushido Tome.
  • Thunder Plains: Completing the mission and rescuing Cid in the secret cave, then defeating the boss, completes the episode. After this, speak with Cid on the deck and return to the bridge for Cid's tirade. Chest contents depend on how well you calibrated the towers in Chapters 2/3. Defeating Humbaba yields Valiant Lustre. Rescuing Cid provides another Al Bhed Primer. Corpus Invictus is found in the secret cave. Completing the cave grants the Salvation Promised GG, and completing it twice gives the Force of Nature ACC. Nature's Lore is also found in the secret cave.
