Treasure Spheres and Chests

Treasure Spheres (Moogle Hunt)

Treasure Spheres are unique to Final Fantasy XIII-2. These are invisible caches of items that can only be revealed and collected with the help of your trusty companion, Mog. Mog's ears will perk up and glow when you are near a hidden Treasure Sphere. To reveal and collect the item:

When Mog's ears glow, press the designated Moogle Hunt button (typically R1/RB).
Mog will fly forward and reveal the hidden sphere.
Walk over the now visible sphere to collect its contents.

Important Considerations for Treasure Spheres:

Location Specific: The contents of a Treasure Sphere are fixed to its location and the specific timeline you are in. They do not change if you revisit the same spot in a different era.
No Evolution: Unlike some other RPGs, the rewards from Treasure Spheres do not "evolve" or get better if you wait to collect them. They will always yield the same item.
Accessibility: Some Treasure Spheres might be in areas that are initially blocked off or require specific story progression to access. If you can't reach one, make a mental note and return later.

Treasure Chests

Traditional Treasure Chests are visible containers that hold various items. These are often found in plain sight or slightly tucked away in corners, requiring a keen eye to spot. Simply approach a chest and interact with it to claim its contents.

Important Considerations for Treasure Chests:

Timeline Variation: While many chests are static, some areas may have different chests, or chests in different locations, depending on the specific AF (After the Fall) timeline you are exploring.
Overlooked Treasures: If you've explored an area thoroughly but feel you've missed something, revisiting it in a different timeline might reveal chests that were previously hidden or inaccessible. This is particularly true for areas that undergo significant environmental changes between eras.

Early Game Treasure Hunting - Bresha Ruins [005 AF] Example

Let's take the Bresha Ruins [005 AF] as an early example of effective treasure hunting:

Upon arriving in Bresha Ruins [005 AF], you'll immediately want to start scanning for both types of treasures. Here's a quick guide to some early finds:

Initial Path: As you proceed from the entrance, keep an eye on Mog. There's often an early Treasure Sphere near the path leading deeper into the ruins, potentially yielding a Potion or a small amount of Gil.
Excavation Site: This area is a prime spot for both visible chests and hidden spheres.
- Visible Chests: Look for chests tucked behind debris or in small alcoves. These often contain useful consumables like Phoenix Downs or Librascopes.
- Invisible Spheres: There's a known Treasure Sphere within the Excavation Site that can be tricky to pinpoint. If Mog's ears are glowing but you can't seem to activate it, try moving slowly around the perimeter of the site, especially near the large machinery or collapsed structures. The exact spot can be small, and you might need to adjust your camera angle. This sphere often contains a Vitality Orb or a Power Orb, valuable early-game Crystarium components.
