Mog's Abilities
Mog, your trusty Moogle companion, is far more than just a cute sidekick. He possesses several unique abilities crucial for exploration, treasure hunting, and even combat. Mastering these will significantly enhance your journey through the various timelines.
Mog's Clock
Mog's Clock is an invaluable tool that appears above enemies on the field. It indicates the remaining time before a monster initiates combat. The clock starts green, transitions to yellow, and finally red as the encounter timer dwindles. If the clock turns red, you're guaranteed to enter battle. However, you can manipulate this to your advantage:
- Pre-emptive Strike: If you engage an enemy while Mog's Clock is green or yellow, you'll gain a pre-emptive strike, allowing your party to act first in battle. This is essential for difficult encounters or quickly dispatching weaker foes.
- Avoiding Combat: If you wish to avoid a battle, simply run away from the enemy until Mog's Clock disappears. Be quick, as some enemies are faster than others!
- Chain Bonus: Engaging enemies with a green clock also contributes to your Chain Bonus, increasing the rewards gained after battle.
Mog Throw
Mog Throw is your primary method for retrieving hard-to-reach items and interacting with environmental objects. This ability becomes available early in the game and is indispensable for collecting treasures.
- How to Use: When you see a sparkling object or a distant item, approach it until a prompt appears (usually "Throw Mog"). Press the indicated button (e.g., Square on PlayStation 3) to have Mog fly out and retrieve the item.
- Common Uses:
- Treasure Spheres: Many treasure spheres are placed on ledges, behind obstacles, or across small gaps, requiring Mog Throw to access.
- Fragment Orbs: Crucial for completing the game and unlocking new areas, many Fragment Orbs are found in obscure locations only reachable by Mog.
- Switches and Levers: In certain areas, Mog can activate switches or pull levers that are out of Serah and Noel's reach, opening new paths or solving puzzles.
- Key Locations for Mog Throw: You'll frequently use Mog Throw in areas like the Bresha Ruins [005 AF] to grab items from collapsed structures, or in Sunleth Waterscape [300 AF] to retrieve items from floating platforms. Always keep an eye out for sparkling indicators!
Mog Hunt
Mog Hunt is a later-game ability that allows Mog to reveal hidden objects and pathways that are otherwise invisible to the naked eye. This is crucial for uncovering secrets and completing certain side quests.
- Unlocking Mog Hunt: This ability is unlocked after progressing through the main story. You'll receive a tutorial prompt when it becomes available.
- How to Use: When you are in an area where Mog Hunt is possible, Mog will often glow or make a distinct sound. Press the designated button (e.g., L3 on PlayStation 3) to activate Mog Hunt. Mog will then fly around, revealing any hidden objects or pathways temporarily.
- What it Reveals:
- Hidden Treasure Spheres: Some valuable items and rare components are completely invisible without Mog Hunt.
- Paradox Endings: Certain Paradox Endings require you to find hidden objects or interact with unseen elements, which Mog Hunt makes possible.
- Secret Paths: In areas like the Academia [4XX AF], Mog Hunt can reveal temporary platforms or invisible bridges, allowing access to new sections.
- Temporal Rifts: Occasionally, Mog Hunt will reveal hidden Temporal Rifts, leading to new areas or challenging encounters.
- Strategy: It's a good practice to periodically activate Mog Hunt in every new area you enter, especially if you're aiming for 100% completion. Some hidden items are very well concealed!
Mog's Manifestation
While not a direct ability you control, Mog's Manifestation refers to his role in the Feral Link system. During combat, when a monster's Feral Link gauge is full, Mog will appear to assist with the Feral Link attack, adding to its power and visual flair. This is an automatic process and doesn't require player input, but it highlights Mog's integral role in your party's combat prowess.
