Final Fantasy XIII utilizes an Active Time Battle (ATB) system, where each character has a gauge that fills over time. Once a segment of the ATB gauge is full, you can input a command. More powerful abilities require more ATB segments. The game also features an auto-battle option, which is highly effective for basic encounters, as the AI will choose optimal actions based on your current Paradigm. The Stagger system is central to defeating tougher enemies and bosses. By repeatedly attacking an enemy, you fill their Stagger Gauge. Once full, the enemy enters a 'Staggered' state, becoming highly vulnerable to damage and often having their defenses significantly reduced. Ravagers are excellent at building the Stagger Gauge, while Commandos excel at dealing damage to staggered enemies. Learning to efficiently build and exploit Stagger is paramount to victory.
