Summons / Eidolons

Eidolons in Final Fantasy XIII are powerful allies that can turn the tide of even the most challenging battles. Each of the six playable characters eventually gains their own unique Eidolon. Unlike previous Final Fantasy titles, Eidolons here are not simply cast; they are summoned during battle when a character's TP (Technical Points) gauge reaches 1 or more and their HP drops below a certain threshold (typically 20-30%). Once summoned, the Eidolon replaces the other two party members, and the summoning character fights alongside their Eidolon.

Summoning Mechanics

To summon an Eidolon:

  1. Ensure the summoning character has at least 1 TP.
  2. Wait for the summoning character's HP to fall into the critical range (indicated by a red HP bar).
  3. Press the designated summon button (usually Square on PlayStation 3, X on Xbox 360).

Once summoned, the battle enters a unique phase:

  • Drive Mode: This is the initial phase where you fight alongside your Eidolon. Your goal is to fill the Eidolon's Gestalt gauge by performing actions and dealing damage.
  • Gestalt Mode: Once the Gestalt gauge is full, you can activate Gestalt Mode. In this mode, your character mounts the Eidolon, and you gain access to powerful, unique abilities. The Gestalt gauge will slowly deplete, and when it runs out, the Eidolon will perform its ultimate attack before leaving the battlefield.

Eidolons are invaluable for difficult encounters, especially against staggered enemies, as their Gestalt attacks often deal massive damage and can extend the stagger duration.

Individual Eidolons and Acquisition

Shiva (Stiria & Nix) - Snow's Eidolon

  • Acquisition: Shiva is the first Eidolon you'll acquire. Snow receives them during Chapter 3 in the Sunleth Waterscape. You'll face them in a boss battle before they join your cause.
  • Battle Strategy (Acquisition): During the battle against Shiva, focus on staggering one sister at a time. Use Snow's Commando role to build the chain gauge and Sentinel to absorb damage. Once one is staggered, unleash your strongest attacks. Repeat for the other sister.
  • Gestalt Mode: Snow rides one of the Shiva sisters, while the other attacks independently. Their Gestalt abilities focus on rapid, ice-elemental attacks and area-of-effect damage.
  • Ultimate Attack: Diamond Dust - Deals heavy ice damage to all enemies.

Odin - Lightning's Eidolon

  • Acquisition: Lightning gains Odin in Chapter 9, within the Palamecia. You'll need to defeat him in battle.
  • Battle Strategy (Acquisition): Odin is a formidable opponent. Focus on staggering him quickly. Use a Commando/Ravager/Medic paradigm to manage damage and build the chain gauge. Be prepared for his powerful physical attacks.
  • Gestalt Mode: Lightning rides Odin, wielding his sword. Gestalt abilities are primarily physical, single-target attacks with high damage output, often capable of launching enemies.
  • Ultimate Attack: Zantetsuken - A devastating physical attack that can instantly defeat weaker enemies or deal immense damage to bosses.

Brynhildr - Sazh's Eidolon

  • Acquisition: Sazh obtains Brynhildr in Chapter 10, during the events at the Fifth Ark. You must defeat her in battle.
  • Battle Strategy (Acquisition): Brynhildr is fire-elemental. Use water-based attacks if available, and focus on staggering her. She has powerful area-of-effect fire attacks, so a Sentinel is highly recommended.
  • Gestalt Mode: Sazh pilots Brynhildr, who transforms into a powerful mech. Gestalt abilities are primarily fire-elemental and focus on rapid-fire attacks and area damage.
  • Ultimate Attack: Muspelheim - Unleashes a barrage of fire-elemental missiles on all enemies.

Bahamut - Fang's Eidolon

  • Acquisition: Fang receives Bahamut in Chapter 11, in the Taejin's Tower. This is a story-driven acquisition and does not involve a boss battle against Bahamut himself.
  • Gestalt Mode: Fang rides Bahamut, who transforms into a dragonic form. Gestalt abilities are powerful physical and aerial attacks, often capable of launching and juggling enemies for extended periods.
  • Ultimate Attack: Megaflare - Deals massive non-elemental damage to all enemies.

Alexander - Hope's Eidolon

  • Acquisition: Hope acquires Alexander in Chapter 11, within the Palamecia. You will face Alexander in a boss battle.
  • Battle Strategy (Acquisition): Alexander is a defensive powerhouse. You'll need to break through his defenses to stagger him. Focus on using Ravagers to build the chain gauge and a Synergist to buff your party. He has strong magical attacks, so a Sentinel and Medic are crucial.
  • Gestalt Mode: Hope is encased within Alexander, who transforms into a fortress. Gestalt abilities are primarily defensive and magical, focusing on powerful area-of-effect attacks and healing.
  • Ultimate Attack: Divine Judgment - A massive non-elemental attack that deals damage to all enemies.

Hecatoncheir - Vanille's Eidolon

  • Acquisition: Vanille obtains Hecatoncheir in Chapter 11, within the Taejin's Tower. You must defeat him in battle.
  • Battle Strategy (Acquisition): Hecatoncheir is a physically imposing foe. Focus on staggering him and using Saboteur abilities to debuff him. His physical attacks are strong, so a Sentinel is vital.
  • Gestalt Mode: Vanille rides Hecatoncheir, who transforms into a multi-armed beast. Gestalt abilities are primarily physical, single-target attacks that can inflict various status ailments and deal high damage.
  • Ultimate Attack: Gaian Blow - Delivers a devastating physical blow to a single enemy.

Tips for Effective Eidolon Use

  • Save TP: Don't waste your TP on minor encounters. Save it for boss battles or particularly challenging enemy groups.
  • Critical HP Management: While waiting for critical HP can be risky, it's necessary to summon. Use a Medic to heal just enough to survive, then let your HP drop again if needed.
  • Stagger First: Whenever possible, try to stagger the enemy *before* entering Gestalt Mode. The damage multiplier from a staggered enemy combined with an Eidolon's ultimate attack is immense.
  • Paradigm Shifts: During Drive Mode, remember to shift paradigms to maximize your Eidolon's Gestalt gauge fill rate. For example, using a Ravager/Ravager paradigm (if your character is a Ravager) will fill the gauge faster.
  • Gestalt Gauge Management: In Gestalt Mode, prioritize using the most powerful abilities before the gauge runs out. Don't be afraid to spam your strongest attacks.
  • Post-Summon Strategy: After an Eidolon leaves, your party will return to its original configuration. Be prepared to immediately shift to a defensive paradigm (e.g., Sentinel/Medic/Medic) to recover if your party is low on HP.
