Crafting / Item Synthesis
Unlike traditional RPGs, Final Fantasy XIII doesn't feature a conventional "crafting" system where you combine items to create new ones from scratch. Instead, the game focuses on a robust Weapon and Accessory Upgrade System. This system allows you to enhance your existing gear, transforming it into more powerful versions and even evolving it into entirely new, stronger items. Mastering this system is crucial for tackling the game's later challenges, especially in Gran Pulse and the post-game content.
Understanding the Upgrade System
The upgrade system is accessed via any save point (Cocoon) or Cie'th Stone (Gran Pulse). Here's a breakdown of its core mechanics:
- Base Item Selection: Choose the weapon or accessory you wish to upgrade.
- Component Selection: Select various components from your inventory to "feed" to your base item. Each component provides Experience Points (EXP) and has a specific "Multiplier" value.
- Experience Points (EXP): As your item gains EXP, its level increases, boosting its base stats (e.g., Strength, Magic, HP).
- Multiplier Bonus: Certain components, when used strategically, can significantly increase the EXP gained from subsequent components. This is key to efficient upgrading.
- Catalyst Requirement: To evolve a maxed-out item into its next tier, you'll need a specific "Catalyst" item. These are often rare and expensive.
Component Types and Strategy
Components fall into two main categories, each with a distinct purpose:
- Organic Components:
- Purpose: Primarily provide a high Multiplier Bonus. They offer minimal EXP on their own.
- Key Items:
- Sturdy Bone: Early-game organic component, found from various small enemies and treasure spheres.
- Vibrant Ooze: Mid-game, drops from enemies like Flans and some Pulse creatures.
- Superconductor: Despite its name, this is an organic component! Excellent multiplier, drops from various mechanical enemies in later chapters.
- Perfect Conductor: The best organic component for multipliers, often found from rare enemy drops or purchased for a high price.
- Strategy: Always start your upgrade session by feeding a few organic components to build up your Multiplier. Aim for a x3 multiplier before switching to mechanical components.
- Mechanical Components:
- Purpose: Provide substantial EXP. They offer a low or no Multiplier Bonus.
- Key Items:
- Iron Bangle: Early-game mechanical component, often dropped by soldiers.
- Spark Plug: Common mechanical component, good for early EXP.
- Credit Chip: Excellent for mid-game EXP, purchasable from shops.
- Power Cable: Good mid-to-late game EXP.
- Ultracompact Reactor: The ultimate mechanical component, providing massive EXP. Drops from powerful enemies like Adamantoises or purchased for 50,000 Gil.
- Strategy: Once your Multiplier is at x3, feed mechanical components until your item reaches its maximum level.
Efficient Upgrading Walkthrough
Follow these steps for optimal upgrading and Gil conservation:
- Gather Components:
- Early Game (Chapters 1-9): Focus on collecting Sturdy Bones and Spark Plugs from enemy drops. Don't spend too much Gil on components yet.
- Mid Game (Chapters 10-12): Start farming Vibrant Ooze and Credit Chips. The Taejin's Tower area is a good spot for various components. Consider purchasing Credit Chips if needed, but prioritize farming.
- Late Game (Chapter 13 & Gran Pulse): This is where serious upgrading begins.
- Farm Superconductors from enemies like the various types of "Manasvin Warmech" in Chapter 13 or Gran Pulse.
- Acquire Ultracompact Reactors by defeating Adamantoises/Adamantortoises (requires a strong party) or purchasing them from the Sanctum Shop in Eden for 50,000 Gil each.
- Initiate Upgrade: At a save point, select "Upgrade" and choose your desired weapon or accessory.
- Build the Multiplier:
- Feed one organic component at a time until the Multiplier reaches x3.
- Example: For early game, feed 3-4 Sturdy Bones. For late game, 1-2 Superconductors or Perfect Conductors will quickly reach x3.
- Important: Do NOT use mechanical components until the multiplier is at x3, as this wastes their EXP potential.
- Feed one organic component at a time until the Multiplier reaches x3.
- Apply EXP Components: Once at x3, feed your highest EXP-yielding mechanical components.
- Example: Early game, use Spark Plugs. Late game, use as many Ultracompact Reactors as needed to reach max level.
- Evolve the Item:
- Once the item reaches its maximum level (e.g., Lionheart* Lv. 26), you'll see a "Catalyst Required" message.
- Select "Evolve" and choose the appropriate Catalyst.
- Key Catalysts:
- Perovskite: Used for many early-to-mid tier weapon evolutions. Can be purchased from shops or found in treasure spheres.
- Adamantite: Essential for evolving powerful weapons and accessories. Drops from Adamantoises/Adamantortoises or purchased for 220,000 Gil.
- Trapezohedron: The rarest and most expensive catalyst, required for the ultimate weapon transformations (e.g., Lionheart -> Ultima Weapon). Drops rarely from Adamantoises/Adamantortoises or purchased for 2,000,000 Gil. You'll need six of these for a full party's ultimate weapons!
- Key Catalysts:
- The item will transform into its next tier (e.g., Lionheart becomes Lionheart* -> Omega Weapon). Its level will reset to 1, but its base stats will be significantly higher.
- Repeat: Continue the process of building the multiplier and feeding components for the newly evolved item until it reaches its final form.
Recommended Items to Upgrade
Prioritize upgrading your main party's weapons and essential accessories first. Here are some strong candidates:
- Weapons:
- Lionheart (Lightning): Excellent for Chain Bonus. Evolves into Omega Weapon.
- Blazefire Saber (Lightning): Good all-rounder. Evolves into Axis Blade.
- Hawkeye (Hope): High Magic stat. Evolves into Eagletalon.
- Nue (Sazh): Balanced stats, good for early game. Evolves into Rigels.
- Kain's Lance (Fang): High Strength. Evolves into Venus Gospel.
- Taming Pole (Fang): Excellent for Staggering. Evolves into Dragon Whisker.
- Belladonna Wand (Vanille): High Magic and debuff potential. Evolves into Malboro Wand.
- Accessories:
- Power Glove / Magistral Crest: Boosts Strength/Magic. Upgrade to Kaiser Knuckles / Tetradic Tiara.
- Black Belt / Rune Bracelet: Reduces physical/magical damage. Upgrade to General's Belt / Witch's Bracelet.
- Aurora Scarf / Sprint Shoes: Grants ATB Charge bonus. Upgrade to Hermes's Sandals for Auto-Haste. This is a game-changer!
- Genji Glove: Allows damage to exceed 99,999. Crucial for post-game superbosses.
Remember, strategic upgrading can make even the toughest battles manageable. Don't neglect this system!
