Money/Gil Farming
Gil is the lifeblood of Cocoon and Pulse, and while Final Fantasy XIII doesn't feature traditional shops for equipment, you'll still need a healthy supply of it for upgrading your weapons and accessories. Component costs can quickly add up, especially when aiming for those coveted ★ (five-star) upgrades. This section details the most efficient methods for accumulating Gil throughout your journey.
Early Game Gil: Chapter 1-9
During the early chapters, your Gil income will be modest. Focus on selling unnecessary components and treasures you acquire from battles. Prioritize upgrading your primary party members' weapons and accessories first, as over-upgrading early on can deplete your funds rapidly.
- Sell Unused Components: Check your inventory regularly for components you don't plan to use for immediate upgrades. Items like Sturdy Bones, Vibrant Ooze, and Bestial Claws can be sold for a decent sum.
- Treasure Spheres: Always open treasure spheres! Many contain valuable items that can be sold directly for Gil or components that fetch a good price.
- Mission 1 (Cocoon) Rewards: While not a farming method, completing early Cie'th Stone Missions (available from Chapter 11 onwards) can provide a significant Gil boost. However, for early game, focus on story progression.
Mid-Game Gil: Chapter 10-12
As you approach Gran Pulse, your Gil needs will increase, and better farming opportunities will emerge. The key here is to balance combat efficiency with item drops.
The Pulse Fal'Cie Anima's Chamber (Chapter 11)
Once you gain access to Gran Pulse, specifically the Taejin's Tower area, a decent farming spot opens up.
- Location: Pulse Fal'Cie Anima's Chamber, within Taejin's Tower.
- Enemies: You'll encounter groups of Feral Behemoths and Mithridates.
- Strategy:
- Engage the Feral Behemoths. These creatures are relatively easy to Stagger and defeat with a balanced party (e.g., Commando/Ravager/Medic).
- They frequently drop Perovskite and Cobaltite, which sell for a good amount of Gil.
- The Mithridates can also drop valuable components, but focus on the Behemoths for consistent income.
- After defeating them, exit the chamber and re-enter to respawn the enemies.
- Expected Income: Approximately 10,000-20,000 Gil per hour, depending on drop rates and combat speed.
Late Game & Post-Game Gil: Chapter 13 & Beyond
This is where the serious Gil farming begins, primarily through repeatable Cie'th Stone Missions and exploiting specific enemy drops.
Mission 24: "Mithridates, the Flesh-Eater" (The Archylte Steppe)
This mission offers a fantastic early post-game Gil farming opportunity.
- Location: The Archylte Steppe - Central Expanse. The Cie'th Stone for Mission 24 is located near the save point.
- Target: Mithridates.
- Strategy:
- Accept Mission 24.
- Head to the marked location and engage Mithridates.
- This enemy is susceptible to Chain Bonus increases. Use a party with strong Ravagers and a Commando to quickly Stagger it.
- Mithridates has a high chance to drop Perovskite and Cobaltite, which sell for 2,500 Gil and 1,000 Gil respectively.
- Upon defeating it, abandon the mission from the menu and then immediately re-accept it to respawn Mithridates. This is faster than returning to the Cie'th Stone.
- Expected Income: 50,000-100,000 Gil per hour, depending on your party's strength and execution.
Mission 55: "The Ultimate Weapon" (Titan's Trials)
This is arguably the most efficient Gil farming method in the post-game, especially once your party is well-developed.
- Location: Oerba Village - Deserted Coast. The Cie'th Stone for Mission 55 is found here.
- Target: Gigantuar.
- Strategy:
- Accept Mission 55.
- Head to the marked location. You'll face a single Gigantuar.
- The key to defeating Gigantuar quickly is to use a party with high physical attack and the Death spell (Vanille's Saboteur role).
- Recommended Paradigm: SAB/COM/MED (Vanille/Fang/Hope or Lightning).
- Start with Vanille casting Death repeatedly.
- Fang and the third party member should focus on dealing damage or buffing/healing as needed.
- The Gigantuar has a low chance of instantly dying to Death, but when it does, the fight is over in seconds.
- Gigantuar drops Platinum Ingots (60,000 Gil each) and Trapezohedrons (10,000 Gil each). The Platinum Ingot is the primary target.
- After defeating it, abandon the mission and re-accept it to respawn the Gigantuar.
- Expected Income: This method is highly variable due to the random nature of Death, but with good luck, you can earn hundreds of thousands of Gil per hour. A single Platinum Ingot drop makes the run incredibly profitable.
Mission 63: "The Road to Hope" (Oerba Village)
This mission involves fighting a powerful enemy, but the rewards are substantial.
- Location: Oerba Village - Abandoned Schoolhouse. The Cie'th Stone for Mission 63 is located here.
- Target: Adamantoise.
- Strategy:
- This is a challenging fight. Ensure your party is fully developed with maxed-out primary roles and strong equipment.
- The most common strategy involves using Vanille's Death spell. Equip her with accessories that boost Magic and debuff success rates (e.g., Malboro Wand, Tetradic Crown).
- Recommended Paradigm: SAB/SEN/MED (Vanille/Fang/Hope).
- Vanille casts Death.
- Fang acts as Sentinel to draw aggro and mitigate damage from the Adamantoise's stomps.
- Hope heals and buffs.
- Alternatively, a full Stagger strategy with high damage output can work, but it's slower.
- Adamantoise drops Platinum Ingots (60,000 Gil) and Trapezohedrons (10,000 Gil).
- After defeating it, return to the Cie'th Stone to re-accept the mission.
- Expected Income: Similar to Mission 55, highly dependent on Death proc rates. When successful, it's one of the best sources of Gil and rare components.
Remember to always have the Collector Catalog and Connoisseur Catalog equipped on your active party members to boost item drop rates, especially when farming for valuable components. Happy hunting, L'Cie!
