Endings Guide
Unlike many RPGs, Final Fantasy XIII features a singular, linear narrative with one definitive ending. There are no branching paths, moral choices, or hidden conditions that lead to alternate conclusions. Your journey will culminate in the same powerful cinematic sequence regardless of your playstyle or completion percentage. However, maximizing your experience before the final confrontation can significantly impact your enjoyment and the ease with which you overcome the game's ultimate challenges.
Preparing for the Final Battle
While there's only one ending, being adequately prepared for the final boss encounters is crucial. The final chapter, Chapter 13: Eden, presents a gauntlet of formidable foes. We highly recommend the following before proceeding too far into the final dungeon:
- Crystarium Completion: Aim to max out the primary roles for your main party members (Lightning, Fang, and Vanille are often a strong choice for the final boss). Focus on Commando, Ravager, Medic, and Sentinel. Having secondary roles well-developed for flexibility is also a huge advantage.
- Weapon Upgrades: Ensure your primary weapons are fully upgraded to their Tier 3 forms. For example, Lightning's Omega Weapon (upgraded from Blazefire Saber), Fang's Kain's Lance (upgraded from Taming Pole), and Vanille's Nirvana (upgraded from Belladonna Wand) are excellent choices. use catalysts like Trapezohedron and Adamantite for the final transformations. These can be farmed from powerful enemies in Gran Pulse or purchased from the Eden Pharmaceuticals shop in Chapter 13 if you have sufficient Gil.
- Accessory Optimization: Equip accessories that boost critical stats like HP, Strength, Magic, and elemental resistances. Genji Gloves (obtained from Cie'th Stone Missions, particularly Mission 51) are invaluable for breaking the damage limit. Ribbons (crafted from Tetradic Crown/Tiara) offer excellent status ailment protection, which is vital in the final battles.
- Farm Gil and Components: Before entering the final areas of Eden, consider spending some time on Gran Pulse. Farming Adamantoise or Shaolong Gui (after completing certain Cie'th Stone Missions) can yield massive amounts of Gil and valuable components like Platinum Ingots and Trapezohedrons, which are essential for maxing out your gear.
- Stock Up on Items: Ensure you have a healthy supply of Potions, Phoenix Downs, Ethers, and Elixirs. While Medics are powerful, having backup healing and revival items can be a lifesaver.
The Final Confrontation (Spoiler Warning!)
The final boss sequence involves multiple stages, culminating in the battle against Orphan. Here's a general strategy to keep in mind:
- Orphan (First Form): This form is primarily a damage race. Focus on aggressive paradigms like Commando/Ravager/Ravager (Cerberus) to build the chain gauge quickly and unleash powerful attacks. Be prepared for its devastating "Merciless Judgment" attack, which can be mitigated with a Sentinel or by quickly healing with a Medic.
- Orphan (Second Form): This form is more tactical. Orphan will switch between offensive and defensive stances. When it's in its defensive stance, focus on buffing your party with Synergists and debuffing Orphan with Saboteurs. When it's vulnerable, switch back to aggressive paradigms. Its "Reap" attack can inflict various status ailments, making Ribbons or a Medic with Esuna crucial.
Successfully defeating Orphan will trigger the game's ending cinematic, providing a satisfying conclusion to the epic journey of the l'Cie.
