New Game+
Unlike many other RPGs, Final Fantasy XIII does not feature a traditional New Game+ mode where you carry over all your progress, items, and character levels into a fresh playthrough. Instead, the game's post-story content and replayability are focused on completing the vast array of optional missions and fully developing your characters and equipment within your existing save file.
Post-Game Content: The True "New Game+" Experience
Once you've completed the main story and defeated Orphan, your save file will be marked with a star, indicating completion. This is where the real "New Game+" equivalent begins. You'll be returned to Gran Pulse, specifically the Archylte Steppe, with access to all previously visited areas (excluding Cocoon's early chapters) and the ability to freely explore.
Your primary objectives in this post-game phase will be:
- Cie'th Stone Missions: These are the core of Final Fantasy XIII's post-game. There are 64 missions in total, ranging from simple hunts to incredibly challenging encounters. Completing these missions often unlocks new areas, powerful accessories, and valuable crafting components.
- Character Development: Maxing out your Crystarium for all six characters is a monumental task. Each character has six primary roles to master, requiring millions of CP. Focus on unlocking all abilities and stat bonuses.
- Weapon and Accessory Upgrades: This is where you'll spend a significant amount of Gil and components. Aim to upgrade your favorite weapons to their ultimate forms (e.g., Lightning's Blazefire Saber to Omega Weapon) and fully level up powerful accessories like the Genji Glove (obtained from Mission 51), Growth Egg (Mission 55), and Collector Catalog (Mission 56).
- Treasure Hunting: Many hidden treasures and rare items become accessible or are easier to obtain with a fully developed party. Revisit areas like the Taejin's Tower, Mah'habara, and the Sunleth Waterscape for missed chests.
- Gil Farming: You'll need substantial amounts of Gil for upgrading. Efficient Gil farming strategies involve repeatedly defeating specific enemies that drop valuable components, such as the Adamantoise family (Adamantoise, Adamantortoise, Long Gui, Shaolong Gui) on Gran Pulse. Equip accessories like the Collector Catalog and Connoisseur Catalog to maximize drops.
Key Post-Game Strategies and Locations
To effectively tackle the post-game challenges, consider these strategies:
Cie'th Stone Mission Progression
- Start with Lower-Tier Missions: Begin with Missions 1-25, which are generally found around the Archylte Steppe and Yaschas Massif. These will help you accumulate CP, Gil, and components.
- Unlock the Chocobos: Completing Mission 14 ("A Parent's Love") on the Archylte Steppe unlocks the ability to ride Chocobos, significantly speeding up exploration and access to new areas.
- Access New Areas: Certain missions unlock paths to new areas. For example, Mission 27 ("Minstrel's Lament") in the Archylte Steppe opens up the path to the Faultwarrens, a challenging dungeon with unique rewards.
- Target Adamantoise Hunts: Once your party is sufficiently strong (ideally with maxed primary roles and upgraded weapons), farming Adamantoise creatures becomes crucial for Gil and Trapezohedrons/Dark Matters. Mission 63 ("The Attacus Incident") is a popular choice for this, as it features an Adamantoise.
- The Legendary Missions: Missions 51, 54, 55, and 64 are particularly noteworthy for their rewards.
- Mission 51 (Attacus, Faultwarrens): Rewards the Genji Glove, allowing damage to exceed 99,999.
- Mission 54 (Gigantuar, Archylte Steppe): Rewards the Cie'th Stone of the Goddess, a key component for certain ultimate weapons.
- Mission 55 (Neochu, Archylte Steppe): Rewards the Growth Egg, doubling CP earned. This is a game-changer for Crystarium completion.
- Mission 64 (Vercingetorix, Faultwarrens): The final and arguably toughest mission, rewarding the Gold Watch, which boosts mission rank scores.
Optimizing Your Party
- Paradigm Shifts are Key: Master quick paradigm shifts to adapt to enemy attacks. For Adamantoise farming, a "COM/RAV/RAV" for staggering, followed by "COM/COM/COM" for damage, and "MED/SEN/SEN" for recovery, is a common setup.
- Role Mastery: Prioritize maxing out the primary roles for your main party members (e.g., Lightning: Commando, Ravager, Medic; Fang: Commando, Sentinel, Saboteur; Vanille: Medic, Saboteur, Ravager).
- Equipment Synergy: Experiment with different weapon and accessory combinations. For example, the Kaiser Knuckles and Power Glove stack for significant strength boosts.
While Final Fantasy XIII doesn't offer a traditional New Game+ reset, its robust post-game content provides hundreds of hours of additional gameplay, allowing you to truly master the combat system and achieve ultimate power.
