Thankfully, Final Fantasy XIV offers robust systems to help new players navigate their path: the Mentor system and the Novice Network. These resources are invaluable for learning the ropes, understanding game mechanics, and connecting with experienced players.

What is a Mentor?

Mentors are seasoned players who have dedicated themselves to assisting new adventurers. They are easily identifiable by the distinctive "Crown" icon next to their character name. Mentors are often found in major city-states like Limsa Lominsa, Gridania, and Ul'dah, or participating in duties.

There are three types of Mentors:

  • Battle Mentors: Focus on combat-related advice, dungeon strategies, raid mechanics, and job-specific guidance.
  • Trade Mentors: Specialize in Disciples of the Hand (crafting) and Disciples of the Land (gathering), offering tips on leveling, rotations, market board strategies, and item acquisition.
  • PvP Mentors: Provide guidance on Player-versus-Player content, including Crystalline Conflict, Frontline, and Rival Wings.

Any player can become a Mentor by fulfilling specific requirements, which typically involve reaching certain milestones in various content types and accumulating a significant number of commendations.

The Novice Network: Your First Stop for Help

The Novice Network is a dedicated in-game chat channel designed exclusively for new adventurers (known as "Novices") and Mentors. It's a fantastic place to ask questions, seek advice, and find groups for content.

How to Join the Novice Network as a Novice

  1. Eligibility: You are automatically considered a Novice if you are a new player or have less than 168 hours of playtime and have not completed the main scenario quest "The Ultimate Weapon."
  2. Invitation: To join the Novice Network, you must receive an invitation from a Mentor. Mentors can invite Novices they encounter in the world or through the "Player Search" function.
  3. Accepting the Invitation: When a Mentor invites you, a system message will appear in your chat log. Click on the prompt to accept the invitation.
  4. Accessing the Channel: Once accepted, the Novice Network will appear as a new tab in your chat window. You can switch to this tab to read messages and post your own questions.

Making the Most of the Novice Network

  • Don't Be Shy: No question is too basic! Mentors are there to help with anything from "How do I equip gear?" to "What's the best rotation for my Black Mage at level 50?"
  • Be Specific: When asking a question, provide as much detail as possible. For example, instead of "How do I do this dungeon?", try "I'm having trouble with the second boss in Sastasha. What's the mechanic I need to watch out for?"
  • use Search: Before asking, consider if your question might be easily answered by a quick search online or in the in-game help menu.
  • Be Respectful: Always maintain good etiquette. Thank Mentors for their help and be patient if responses aren't immediate.
  • Leaving the Network: You will automatically leave the Novice Network once you no longer meet the Novice eligibility requirements. You can also manually leave the network by right-clicking the Novice Network chat tab and selecting "Leave Novice Network."

Mentor Roulette: A Way to Give Back (and Get Rewards!)

For players who have become Mentors, the "Mentor Roulette" is a special duty roulette that pairs them with Novices or players in need of assistance in various content. This can include dungeons, trials, raids, and even Guildhests.

How to Access Mentor Roulette

  1. Become a Mentor: First, you must meet the requirements to become a Mentor. Speak to the Adventure Plate Guide in any of the three major city-states (e.g., Limsa Lominsa Upper Decks at X:11.5, Y:11.0) to register as a Mentor.
  2. Unlock the Roulette: Once registered, the "Mentor Roulette" option will appear in your Duty Finder (accessible via the main menu or by pressing 'U' by default).

Benefits of Running Mentor Roulette

  • Helping New Players: The primary benefit is the satisfaction of guiding new adventurers through content and answering their questions.
  • Unique Rewards: Completing Mentor Roulette duties awards special Tomestones and achievements. Most notably, completing 2,000 Mentor Roulette duties unlocks the coveted Astrope mount, a majestic pegasus.
  • Practice and Refresh: It's an excellent way for experienced players to revisit older content, practice different roles, and refresh their knowledge of various mechanics.
