Mounts and Minions

Eorzea is a vast and wondrous land, and what better way to traverse its breathtaking landscapes or simply show off your unique style than with a trusty mount or a charming minion by your side? This comprehensive guide will detail how to acquire, use, and even manage your growing collection of these delightful companions.

Acquiring Mounts

Mounts in Final Fantasy XIV serve as your primary mode of transportation across zones. They can be obtained through various means, from quest rewards to challenging boss drops and even seasonal events.

Quest Rewards

  • Chocobo: Your very first mount, the iconic Chocobo, is obtained early in your adventure. Complete the Main Scenario Quest (MSQ) "Hero in the Making" and then speak to the Stablemaster in your Grand Company headquarters to undertake the quest "My Little Chocobo." You'll need 200 Grand Company Seals to purchase a Chocobo Issuance.
  • Magitek Armor: This imposing Garlean war machine is a reward for completing the MSQ "The Ultimate Weapon" at the climax of A Realm Reborn.

Dungeon & Trial Drops

Many mounts are rare drops from specific dungeons, trials, and raids. These often have low drop rates, making them coveted prizes for persistent adventurers.

  • Nightmare, Aithon, Xanthos, Gullfaxi, Ixion, Boreas, Kirin: These elemental ponies drop from the Extreme versions of the A Realm Reborn Primal trials (Ifrit, Garuda, Titan, Leviathan, Ramuh, Shiva, and King Thordan respectively). Collecting all six elemental ponies allows you to unlock the Kirin mount through the quest "A Legend for a Legend" from the Wandering Minstrel in Mor Dhona (X:21.7, Y:8.7).
  • Warbear/Warlion: These majestic mounts are awarded for achieving 300 wins in Frontline PvP as a tank or melee DPS, respectively.

Achievement Rewards

Some mounts are tied to specific achievements, often requiring significant dedication to various in-game activities.

  • Centurio Tiger: Awarded for completing the achievement "You Got Game" by successfully completing 3,000 B-rank, 2,000 A-rank, and 1,000 S-rank Elite Marks.

Purchased Mounts

several mounts can be purchased using different currencies or from specific vendors.

  • MGP Mounts: The Gold Saucer offers a plethora of unique mounts in exchange for Manderville Gold Saucer Points (MGP). Examples include the Fenrir, Archon Throne, and Sabotender Emperador.
  • Beast Tribe Mounts: Maxing out reputation with certain Beast Tribes will unlock unique mounts for purchase from their respective vendors. For instance, the Direwolf is available from the Amalj'aa, and the Bomb Palanquin from the Kobolds.

Acquiring Minions

Minions are adorable, non-combat pets that follow you around, adding a touch of personality to your character. Like mounts, they can be obtained through a wide array of methods.

Dungeon & Trial Drops

Many dungeons and trials have a chance to drop unique minions.

  • Peculiar Light: A rare drop from the final boss of the Shisui of the Violet Tides dungeon.
  • Wind-up Succubus: Can drop from the final boss of the Baelsar's Wall dungeon.

Quest Rewards

Some side quests and even certain Main Scenario Quests will reward you with a minion.

  • Wind-up Enterprise: Obtained by completing the side quest "A Realm Reborn" from the Unsung Hero in the Rising Stones (X:6.0, Y:6.0) after completing the 2.0 MSQ.

Crafting & Gathering

Crafters and gatherers can create or unearth certain minions.

  • Wind-up Sun: Can be crafted by a Weaver with sufficient skill and rare materials.
  • Tiny Tortoise: Occasionally found while fishing in specific locations.

Purchased Minions

Vendors across Eorzea offer various minions for purchase with Gil, Grand Company Seals, or other currencies.

  • Wind-up Airship: Available for 20,000 Gil from the Grand Company Quartermasters.
  • Mammet #003L: Can be purchased from the Minion Merchant in Ul'dah - Steps of Nald (X:10.5, Y:9.5).

Seasonal Events & Mog Station

Limited-time seasonal events often offer exclusive minions. Additionally, a wide selection of unique minions can be purchased from the Mog Station for real money.

Managing Your Companions

Mount Guide

To access your Mount Guide, open your main menu and navigate to Character > Mount Guide. Here, you can see all your acquired mounts, register them to your hotbar for quick access, and even customize your Chocobo's barding.

  • Registering to Hotbar: Drag the mount icon from the Mount Guide directly onto an empty slot on your hotbar.
  • Chocobo Customization: Select your Chocobo in the Mount Guide and click "Customize." You can change its barding (armor) here, which is acquired through various means like crafting or quest rewards.

Minion Guide

Similarly, your Minion Guide is found under Character > Minion Guide. This interface displays all your collected minions. You can summon a minion by clicking its icon, and dismiss it by clicking the active minion's icon at the top of the guide.

  • Summoning Minions: Simply click on the minion you wish to summon from the guide. Only one minion can be active at a time.
  • Releasing Minions (Island Sanctuary): On your Island Sanctuary, you have the unique ability to release minions into your pasture. To do this, approach the Minion Management NPC (located near the pasture entrance). Select the option to "Release Minions," then choose which minions from your collection you wish to set free on your island. They will then roam freely within your pasture, adding to the ambiance. You can retrieve them at any time through the same NPC.

Collecting mounts and minions is a beloved aspect of Final Fantasy XIV, offering both practical benefits and endless opportunities for personalization. Happy hunting, adventurer!
