Reputation and Faction Systems

In Final Fantasy XIV, cultivating strong relationships with various factions and their representatives is a cornerstone of progression, offering unique rewards, access to specialized vendors, and unlocking new content. Unlike some other MMOs, FFXIV's reputation systems are generally tied to specific content rather than a single overarching "karma" meter. Understanding these systems is crucial for maximizing your character's potential.

Beast Tribe Quests: Earning Their Trust

Beast Tribe Quests are daily repeatable quests that allow you to increase your standing with various non-human races across Eorzea and beyond. Each Beast Tribe offers unique lore, storylines, and rewards, including mounts, minions, crafting materials, and exclusive gear. Progressing through their reputation ranks unlocks new quests, vendor items, and eventually, a special final quest that concludes their story arc.

How to Unlock Beast Tribe Quests:

  1. Complete Prerequisite Main Scenario Quests (MSQ): Each Beast Tribe has specific MSQ requirements that must be met before their introductory quest becomes available. For example, to unlock the Sylph Beast Tribe quests, you must have completed the MSQ "In Pursuit of the Past."
  2. Accept the Introductory Quest: Once the MSQ requirement is met, a blue quest icon (indicating an unlockable feature) will appear on the map.
    • Sylph: "Seeking Ulaa" from Komuxio in Gridania (X:27.2, Y:15.8).
    • Ixal: "A Bad Bladder" from Scarlet in New Gridania (X:9.9, Y:11.4).
    • Kobold: "Highway Robbery" from Trachraet in Limsa Lominsa Upper Decks (X:12.7, Y:12.8).
    • Sahagin: "They Came from the Deep" from R'ashaht Rhiki in Limsa Lominsa Upper Decks (X:13.1, Y:12.8).
    • Amalj'aa: "Peace for Thanalan" from Swift in Ul'dah - Steps of Nald (X:8.4, Y:8.9).
    • (Note: Subsequent expansions introduce more Beast Tribes, each with their own unlock conditions.)
  3. Complete the Initial Quest Chain: The introductory quest will lead you through a short storyline, culminating in the ability to accept daily quests from the Beast Tribe's main hub.

Daily Quest Strategy:

  • Daily Allowance: You can accept a maximum of 12 Beast Tribe quests per real-world day, shared across all available tribes. Prioritize tribes based on the rewards you desire.
  • Reputation Ranks: Each tribe has several reputation ranks (e.g., Neutral, Recognized, Friendly, Trusted, Honored, Sworn, Allied). Completing daily quests grants reputation points, progressing you through these ranks.
  • Increased Rewards: As your reputation rank increases, new daily quests become available, offering more experience points, gil, and unique tokens that can be exchanged for items.
  • Vendor Unlocks: Each new reputation rank typically unlocks new items at the Beast Tribe's vendor. Check these vendors regularly for new mounts, minions, crafting recipes, and glamour items.

Grand Companies: Serving Your City-State

The Grand Companies are the military and political organizations of Eorzea's three city-states: the Maelstrom (Limsa Lominsa), the Twin Adder (Gridania), and the Immortal Flames (Ul'dah). Joining a Grand Company is a mandatory part of the Main Scenario Quest and opens up several content, including unique gear, mounts, and the ability to command squadrons.

Joining a Grand Company:

You will be prompted to join a Grand Company during the Main Scenario Quest around Level 20, specifically after completing the quest "A Realm Reborn." You'll visit the three Grand Company headquarters and ultimately choose one to pledge your allegiance to.

  • The Maelstrom: Located at the Limsa Lominsa Upper Decks (X:13.1, Y:12.8). Focuses on naval power and trade.
  • The Twin Adder: Located at the Adders' Nest in Gridania (X:9.9, Y:11.4). Focuses on nature and defense of the Black Shroud.
  • The Immortal Flames: Located at the Hall of Flames in Ul'dah - Steps of Nald (X:8.4, Y:8.9). Focuses on military might and protecting the desert regions.

Earning Grand Company Seals:

Grand Company Seals are the currency used to purchase items from your Grand Company Quartermaster. You can earn seals through various activities:

  • Duty Roulette: Completing certain Duty Roulettes (e.g., Leveling, Guildhests) grants a bonus of Grand Company Seals.
  • Fates: Participating in FATEs (Full Active Time Events) in the open world often rewards seals upon completion.
  • Supply and Provisioning Missions: These daily turn-ins, accessible from your Grand Company Barracks, require you to deliver specific crafting or gathering items. High-quality items yield bonus seals.
  • Expert Deliveries: Once you reach the rank of Second Lieutenant, you can turn in unwanted green, blue, or purple gear to your Grand Company for seals. This is an excellent way to clear inventory and gain currency.
  • Grand Company Leves: Special Levequests offered by your Grand Company provide seals and experience.

Grand Company Ranks and Rewards:

Your Grand Company rank progresses by earning seals and completing specific promotion quests. Each rank unlocks new benefits:

  • Quartermaster Access: Higher ranks unlock more powerful gear, unique mounts (e.g., Company Chocobo, Grand Company Aetheryte Tickets), crafting materials, and glamour items.
  • Squadron System: At the rank of Second Lieutenant, you unlock the Squadron system, allowing you to recruit and train NPC adventurers to undertake missions and even run dungeons with you.
  • Chocobo Companion Training: Grand Company Quartermasters sell items like "Chocobo Barding" and "Thavnairian Onion" for training your personal Chocobo companion.
  • Teleportation Discounts: Higher ranks can reduce the cost of teleportation to areas within your Grand Company's territory.

Custom Deliveries: Personal Relationships

Custom Deliveries are a weekly system introduced in later expansions that allow Disciples of the Hand and Land to build rapport with specific NPCs by crafting or gathering requested items. These relationships offer significant experience, gil, and scrips, making them invaluable for leveling crafters and gatherers.

Unlocking Custom Deliveries:

Each Custom Delivery NPC has a specific unlock quest. For example:

  • Zhloe Aliapoh: Unlocked by completing "Reach for the Stars" in Idyllshire (X:4.7, Y:6.7), after finishing the MSQ "Litany of Peace."
  • M'naago: Unlocked by completing "None More Than You" in Rhalgr's Reach (X:13.8, Y:11.8), after finishing the MSQ "Stormblood."
  • Kurenai: Unlocked by completing "The Custom-made Maiden" in Kugane (X:10.1, Y:9.9), after finishing the MSQ "Tide Goes Out, Tide Comes In."
  • (More Custom Delivery NPCs are added with each expansion.)

Weekly Strategy:

  • Weekly Cap: You can make up to 12 Custom Deliveries per week, shared across all available NPCs. Each NPC can receive a maximum of 6 deliveries per week.
  • Requested Items: Each week, the NPC will request specific crafted or gathered items. These items change weekly.
  • Quality Matters: Delivering High-Quality (HQ) items grants significantly more experience and scrips.
  • Rapport Ranks: As you make deliveries, your rapport with the NPC increases. Higher rapport ranks unlock new dialogue, story segments, and eventually, unique glamour items or emotes from the Custom Delivery vendor.
  • Scrip Exchange: The scrips earned from Custom Deliveries can be exchanged for valuable crafting and gathering materials, master recipes, and gear at the Scrip Exchange vendors in various cities.
