Combat System Explained
The combat system in Fire Emblem Awakening is a turn-based affair where strategic positioning and understanding unit matchups are paramount. Battles take place on a grid, with each unit occupying a single tile. Movement is dictated by a unit's movement range, represented by blue tiles, and their attack range, indicated by red tiles. When a unit attacks, it initiates a combat sequence. The outcome of this sequence is determined by several factors, including the attacker's and defender's stats (Strength, Skill, Speed, Luck, Defense, Resistance), weapon effectiveness, terrain bonuses, and the presence of adjacent allies providing "Dual Support." The weapon triangle plays a critical role: swords are strong against axes, axes against lances, and lances against swords. This relationship grants a significant advantage in both attack and defense when the triangle is in your favor.
A key mechanic is the "Dual System." When two allied units are adjacent, they can engage in "Dual Attacks," where the second unit attacks after the first, potentially dealing additional damage. Conversely, they can perform a "Dual Guard," where the second unit intercepts an incoming attack on the first, reducing damage taken. The chance of these events occurring is influenced by the "Dual Strike" and "Dual Guard" stats of the units involved, which are often boosted by their Support level. Furthermore, terrain tiles can provide defensive bonuses, such as increased Avoid or Defense, making certain positions more advantageous for survival. For example, a unit positioned on a fort tile will receive a significant defensive boost. Understanding these environmental factors and how they interact with unit abilities is crucial for minimizing casualties and maximizing efficiency.
When a unit attacks, the game calculates hit rates and damage. Hit rate is determined by the attacker's Skill and Luck, versus the defender's Skill and Luck. Damage is calculated based on the attacker's Strength or Magic (depending on the weapon), minus the defender's Defense or Resistance. Critical hits, indicated by a red flash, deal triple damage and are influenced by the attacker's Skill and Luck. Conversely, critical evasion is determined by the defender's Skill and Luck. Players must carefully weigh the risks and rewards of each engagement, considering the potential for enemy counter-attacks, critical hits, and the impact of terrain and dual support. Mastering these combat mechanics is essential for overcoming the challenges presented by the game's various enemy formations and powerful boss units.
