Leveling Up & Stat Growth
The progression of your units in Fire Emblem Awakening is primarily driven by the "Leveling Up" system and the subsequent "Stat Growth" that occurs with each level gained. When a unit participates in combat and earns experience points (EXP), they will eventually reach the next level. Upon leveling up, a unit's stats increase based on their individual growth rates and the class they belong to. These growth rates are represented as percentages for each stat: HP, Strength (STR), Magic (MAG), Skill (SKL), Speed (SPD), Luck (LCK), Defense (DEF), and Resistance (RES). For example, a unit with a 60% HP growth rate has a 60% chance of increasing their HP by 1 when they level up.
The effectiveness of stat growth is heavily influenced by the character's base stats and their class. Certain classes have naturally higher growth rates in specific stats. For instance, a Wyvern Rider typically has high STR and DEF growths, while a Sage excels in MAG and RES growths. Understanding these class-specific growths is crucial for optimizing your army. Furthermore, the "Second Seal" item allows for reclassing a unit into a different class, which can be used to reset their level to 1 while retaining their learned skills and allowing them to grow under a new set of class-based growth rates. This is a powerful tool for developing units with optimized stat distributions. For example, reclassing a character with excellent MAG growth into a class that benefits from it, like a Dark Knight, can create a potent magic-user.
also be aware of the "Max Level" for each class. Base classes typically cap at level 10, after which they must promote using a Master Seal to reach a higher tier class, which then has its own level cap, usually at 15 or 20. Promoted classes offer access to higher base stats and often new, more powerful skills. For example, promoting a Cavalier to a Paladin grants access to the "Canto" skill, allowing them to move again after attacking. The distribution of stat gains can sometimes feel random due to the percentage-based growth system, leading to "RNG screw" or "RNG blessed" units. However, consistent use of units, strategic reclassing with Second Seals, and careful attention to class promotions will ensure your army grows strong enough to face the challenges presented by the game's numerous chapters, including difficult boss encounters like Walhart.
